Irish production company Treasure Entertainment has optioned international bestseller The Glorious Guinness Girls, the fifth novel by bestselling author Emily Hourican, published by Hachette.

Set amid the turmoil of the Irish Civil War and the brittle glamour of 1920s London, The Glorious Guinness Girls is inspired by one of the most fascinating family dynasties in the world, and described as an unforgettable novel of reckless youth, family loyalty, and destiny.

The project is being developed as a recurring TV drama series and will be produced by Treasure Entertainment’s Rebecca O’Flanagan and Robert Walpole.

“We are so excited to be working on this adaptation. We love Emily’s work and think this is such an exciting exploration of the family behind the international brand,” said Rebecca O’Flanagan. “The sisters’ stories are in equal parts glamorous, romantic and tragic. And it is so relevant today: it mines themes of identity, class, gender, and the need for purpose in a fulfilling life. But told through a gripping prism of wit and intrigue”.

The Glorious Guinness Girls are the toast of London and Dublin society. Darlings of the press, Aileen, Maureen, and Oonagh lead charmed existences that are the envy of many. But Fliss knows better. Sent to live with them as a child, she grows up as part of the family and only she knows of the complex lives beneath the glamorous surface. Then, at a party one summer's evening, something happens, which sends shockwaves through the entire household. In the aftermath, as the Guinness sisters move on, Fliss is forced to examine her place in their world and decide if where she finds herself is where she truly belongs.

Treasure Entertainment is known for several critically successful films and television project, the most recent of which includes drama series Smother, co-produced with BBC Studios, for RTÉ. Other credits include John Butler’s feature films Papi ChuloHandsome Devil, and The Stag; Paddy Breathnach's Oscar shortlisted Viva; and BAFTA-nominated Good Vibrations

“I've been impressed with the creative work of Treasure Films since seeing I Went Down in 1997. Since then, I have loved so many of their films - Saltwater, The Stag, Handsome Devil among others, as well as TV including Smother and Finding Joy,” said Emily Hourican.

“So when Rebecca O'Flanagan first talked about taking an option on The Glorious Guinness Girls, and bringing it to a TV audience, I was instantly enthusiastic,” Hourican added. “Since then, we have talked about what the project might look like, and I know that she gets the book, the girls, and the era, wonderfully, as well as having loads of fresh, exciting ideas. I can't wait to see what Rebecca and Rob Walpole bring to the Guinness Girls ”.

Emily Hourican is the author of six novels, The Guinness Girls: A Hint of Scandal, The Glorious Guinness Girls, The Privileged, White Villa, The Blamed and The Outsider, and one book of non-fiction, How To Really Be A Mother. Her first novel, The Privileged was published in 2016, becoming an instant bestseller, and was short-listed for the Best Popular Fiction Awards at the 2016 Irish Book Awards.

The Glorious Guinness Girls was nominated for the Best Popular Fiction Awards at the 2020 Irish Book Awards. Emily has been an editor of Himself magazine, The Dubliner magazine, and Hospitality Ireland; and a journalist, writing for The Sunday Independent, Image magazine, Woman and Home, Conde Nast Traveller, and Time Out, for over 20 years.

The Glorious Guinness Girls television project is currently in development.
