Irish Feature ‘Citadel’ Named Best Film at Swiss Film Festival

Irish film ‘Citadel’ has won the Narcisse Best Film Award at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival.

The win comes just days after the feature picked up the Best First Feature award at the Galway Film Fleadh.

The Neuchâtel Festival was held in Switzerland last week, and screened over 100 films throughout its nine days, with more than 29,000 attendees. Jon Wright’s ‘Grabbers’, which opened the Galway Film Fleadh last Tuesday, also screened at the festival on July 7.

‘Citadel’, described as a psychological horror, sees an agoraphobic man and a vigilante priest attempt to save the man’s daughter from a group of feral children.

The horror was directed by Ciarán Foy and produced by Katie Holly for Dublin-based Blinder Films and Brian Coffey for Sigma Films in Scotland. It stars James Cosmo (Game of Thrones), Aneurin Barnard (We’ll Take Manhattan) and Wunmi Mosaku (Vera).

Speaking after ‘Citadel’s’ Galway Film Fleadh screening, actress Caroline Morahan (A Kiss for Jed) said: “It’s a testament to their (Blinder) skill that I could barely watch the film, it was so horrifying, it was really just a psychological-thriller horror, it just pours into your skull.”

The film previously picked up the Midnighter Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. It will be released in US cinemas this autumn thanks to a distribution deal with Cinedigm, which will be followed by a DVD release early next year, handled by New Video.

’Citadel’ received funding from the IFB and Creative Scotland.
