Cinemagic Film Festival For Young People Returns To Dublin On June 12

BAFTA-winning director Neasa Hardiman, artist and television personality Don Conroy and drama teacher Emma Coogan will all be on hand to celebrate the art of film with participants under 12.

The festival is returning to Dublin after a successful May event, which saw ‘X Factor’ presenter Dermot O’Leary hold a workshop in the art of presenting, and film historian Kevin Rockett discussing the silent film era with aspiring filmmakers.

This month’s events include a creative writing workshop with Neasa Hardiman, the BATFA-winning director of successful childrens’ series ‘Tracy Beaker Returns’. Neasa will introduce the young students to the structures of creative writing, before they are let loose on their own stories.

Artist, writer and former RTÉ personality Don Conroy will also teach the children how to write creative stories, as well as teach them to create original art and design techniques.

Emma Coogan, founder of the School of Speech and Drama, will also be on hand to host a Beatrix Potter-themed workshop, which will be packed with Potter activities, followed by an Early Years Drama course.

Other festival highlights include a public film programme, which will screen classic kids’ favourites such as the heart-warming ‘Matilda’, fantasy adventure ‘The Borrowers’, and robot movie ‘The Iron Giant’.

The Festival Jury Competition will run on Saturday, June 16, where young people will act as film critics for the day and vote for their favourite films.

Other workshops include Storytelling, which will see genres of films such as fiction, folklore and fairytale explored, as well as screenings of childrens’ animations ‘Thomas and Friends’ and ‘Bob the Builder’.

This branch of the Cinemagic Festival specifically caters for those aged under 12 years old. It will run from June 12-17, in various locations around Dublin. Cinemagic CEO Joan Burney Keatings said the under-12’s festival will “inspire and motivate and give young people an insight to the film and television industry”.
