Irish actor Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones, Hunger) has been cast in BBC fantasy adventure ‘Merlin’, it has been confirmed. The ‘Game of Thrones’ actor caused a Twitter frenzy just over a week ago after tweeting a number of hints that he filmed scenes for series five in Wales. The BBC confirmed the news to IFTN on Friday (April 20).

Cunningham tweeted last Thursday, April 12, “Flew from Dublin to Cardiff yesterday to be a corpse today. I rehearsed the scene after a few pints last night.” When one follower asked if his tweet was a ‘Game of Thrones’ spoiler, Cunningham replied: “definitely not! A different job.”

The following day he added to the speculation by tweeting, “Been filming with the wonderful Richard Wilson. Can you believe it? ;).” Wilson, star of BBC comedy ‘One Foot in the Grave’, plays Gaius in ‘Merlin’, which began filming on series five in France and Wales last month.

Cunningham currently plays Ser Davos Seaworth in HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’, which airs on Sky Atlantic on Monday nights. He recently portrayed ‘Big’ Jim Larkin in the BBC epic ‘Titanic: Blood and Steel’. 13 episodes of ‘Merlin’ have been ordered for BBC One. The fourth series finale aired at Christmas 2011. The series also stars Irish actors Colin Morgan and Katie McGrath.
