Stephen Fry (Q.I) filmed the cameo appearance in the soap last December as part of a BBC TV series on minority languages called ‘Planet World’. The appearance will air on this Sunday’s episode of ‘Planet World’ which is on BBC2, October 2nd at 9pm.
Fry travelled to Spiddal in Galway for the BBC series to find out more about the Irish language in contemporary Irish society. Whilst there, he filmed a cameo role in ‘Ros na Rún’ where he played a confused English tourist who was lost in Connemara.
Fry’s character wandered in local pub ‘Tigh Thaidhg’ looking for directions and came to face to face with cranky publican Tadhg Ó Diréain (Macdara Ó Fatharta) and resident barfly Séamus Ó Catháin (Diarmuid Mac An Adhaistair).
Commenting on the experience Fry said “Altogether, my brief but happy appearance on Ros Na Run (forgive lack of fadas) was one of the highlights of my twenty-frost century so far. The whole set seemed like a family and I was welcomed into it with warmth and kindness. I feel very honoured to be one of the few non-Irish speakers who have been singled out like this.”
Hugh Farley, Series Producer of ‘Ros na Rún’ says “We were delighted to welcome BBC2 to the set of Ros na Rún recently, as part of their upcoming series, ‘Planet Word’. Our writers developed a highly entertaining storyline for series presenter, Stephen Fry, to feature in and his grasp of the Irish language was commendable!”
‘Ros na Rún’ is co-produced by Eo Teilifis and Tyrone Productions for TG4 and it broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 8.30pm.
The cameo appearance was screened on 'Ros na Rún 'earlier this year and you can watch the footage here:
