Written, directed, created and co-produced by Neil Jordan (Ondine, The Butcher Boy), The Borgias premiered in the UK and Ireland on Saturday night on Sky Atlantic and attracted an audience over three times higher than the average ratings for the slot.
The first two episode were presented in a Sky Atlantic Double Bill on Saturday August 13th. The first episode of the historical drama at 9pm averaged 576,000 (2.8%), which falls well above the slot average of 164,000. The second episode which was aired in succession at 10pm attracted an average audience of 409,000 (2.38%), according to ratings released by Attentional.
The series follows the notorious 15th century Italian Borgias family. It stars Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons as Rodrigo Borgia, the patriarch of the family who aims to become pope. An Octagon Films co-production, the cast of the series includes Lotte Verbeek (Nothing Personal), Peter Sullivan (Conspiracy), Holliday Grainger (Jane Eyre) and Francois Arnoud. Executive producer on the project is Octagon Films’ James Flynn (The Tudors, Inside I’m Dancing).
‘The Borgias’ opened in the US on Sunday April 3rd on Showtime and attracted Showtime’s highest ever rating figures for an opening pilot in eight years. ‘The Borgias’ is now showing on Sky Atlantic, with Episode Three being shown this Saturday August 20th at 9pm. Jordan is currently in production with series two.
