'Paradiso' Wins 11th International Award at Milan Festival
24 May 2011 :
Paradiso
‘Paradiso’, a documentary filmed entirely in Derry, Northern Ireland has won two awards at the Docucity Film Festival in Milan (19 - 22 May). This brings the documentary’s total number of international awards to eleven. ‘Paradiso’ is directed by Alessandro Negrini and produced by Margo Harkin (Waveriders) of Bessom Productions.

Commissioned by the BBC, the documentary follows Derry musician Roy Arbuckle as he attempts to reinvigorate a passion for music and dance in a community that still lives in the shadow of the Troubles. The director of photography for the project was Odd-Geir Saether.

‘Paradiso’ was awarded an Audience Award and a Special Mention from the International Jury at the Docucity Film Festival in Milan, the Jury giving the following explanation for the awarded prizes: “For the capability of bringing to the fore the history of Northern Ireland with lightness and, at the same time, poetry and irony. Paradiso is able to capture a community in a lyrical way, from the point of view of the two sisters and through the music.”

‘Paradiso’ has been well received on the festival circuit, winning a total of eleven awards and screening internationally in many festivals including India, Mexico, Romania and the USA. Previous awards include Best Film in Festival and Best Film in Category ‘Rapprochement of Cultures’ at the ‘We the People Film Festival’ in London (2010), Best Documentary at the Arcipelago Rome Film Festival, Italy (2010) and ‘Best Documentary’ at Padova International River Festival, Italy (2010).

The 2nd annual Docucity film festival took place in Milan and again this year looked to screen contemporary urban projects from across Europe. For a full list of this year’s winners visit www.docucity.unimi.it
