The Pipe
Risteárd Ó Domhnaill and Rachel Lysaght’s Shell to Sea feature documentary, ‘The Pipe’ has been awarded the Grand Prix at Circom, an awards ceremony hosted by the network of regional European broadcasters.

The feature had already taken the Best Documentary pyize at the event ahead of the top award announcment. Other successful Irish projects at Circom included Fastnet Films’ ‘Gualainn le Gualainn’ which came commended in the Sport Programme category and Magamedia’s ‘Corp + Anam’ which came commended in the Fiction/ Drama Programme

Directed by Ó Domhnaill and produced by Rachel Lysaght, ‘The Pipe’ is a feature documentary that examines the protest that rose up amongst Irish farmers and fisherman against Shell Oil’s decision to build a high pressure pipe for the transportation of raw gas through the town of Rossport to an inland refinery. The film depicts clashes between protestors and the Gardaí and explores the story of the five local men known as the ‘Rossport Five' who served prison sentences for their respective roles in the protest. The grand prix win came with a prize of €3,000 as well as the category trophy.

This is the latest in a series of awards that ‘The Pipe’ has scored having also won the Audience Award for Best Feature-Length Documentary at the 2010 Galway Film Fleadh; the Feature Documentary prize at this year’s Irish Film and Television Awards and Best Factual Documentary at last month’s Celtic Media Festival 2011 held in Scotland. The documentary is broadcasting on TG4 on Saturday, May 14th at 8.10pm.

In the Circom category of Sport Programme, the BBC West Midlands’ ‘Late Kick Off’ nabbed the top prize whilst Fastnet Films’ ‘Gualainn le Gualainn’ was commended by the jury. The four part TG4 series looks at the history of Irish Rugby and is directed by Andrew Gallimore and produced by Morgan Bushe (The Other Side of Sleep) and Conor Barry (Mr Crocodile in the Cupboard).

Finally, whilst ARD’s ’99 der Verlorene Sohn’ clinched the win in the category of Fiction/ Drama Programme, Magamedia’s ‘Corp + Anam’ came highly commended. The 4 x one hour TG4 series starring Diarmuid de Faoite (Padraic) and Maria Doyle Kennedy (The Tudors), tells the story of TV crime correspondent Cathal Mac Iarnáin, who determines to pursue the truth behind every story, regardless of its calamitous consequences. It is produced by Paddy Hayes (Ealú).

Welcoming its trick-hat of accolades, TG4 Commissioning Editor, Proinsias Ní Ghráinne commented that: “TG4 has been a consistent winner at Circom over the past decade and this latest recognition proves the quality of our programmes resonates with our European colleagues”.

Circom is the European-wide federation of regional television broadcasters and has a membership of over 300 television stations spread across 38 states. It organises an annual awards show where it looks to celebrate the best and most original work from all of its members. For a full list of winners visit www.circom-regional.eu
