'Dance on the Box' Slams onto the Small Screen
11 May 2010 :
Deep End Dance
The Arts Council and RTÉ funded Dance on the Box projects will broadcast on RTÉ2 from May 17th to May 20th. Following a launch by Filmbase on May 13th the four short dance films chosen to be commissioned as part of this year’s programme will transmit nightly and will see dancers perform in a church, under water, in a cinema and in a mother’s memory.

RTÉ Dance on the Box looks to bring the best of Irish contemporary dance and film artists to a national audience. Over 900,000 viewers tuned in to see the eight dance films commissioned in 2006 and 2008 by RTÉ Dance On The Box, the Arts Council and RTÉ's dance film initiative and premiered on RTÉ television during the Dublin Dance Festival.

As a result of this the Arts Council and RTÉ came together again for a third season of RTÉ Dance on the Box. Four short films have been commissioned by the choreographer/director teams of John Scott and Steve Woods, David Bolger and Conor Horgan, Cindy Cummings and Oonagh Kearney and Fearghus Ó Conchuir and Dearbhla Walsh.

The four chosen projects deal with a haunting response to the impact of abuse on faith, the deep attachment of mothers and children, and a ferocious vision of an entrapped dancer. 'Mo Mhórchoir Féin - A Prayer' will broadcast on Monday, 17th May, at 10.55pm. The film sees a dancer, an altar-boy and a watcher in the shadows. ‘Her Mother’s Daughters’ will show on Tuesday, May 18th at 11.20pm and centres around the empty house of a mother whose daughters have flown the nest.

Wednesday, May 19th at 10.50pm sees the transmission of ‘Admit One’ where we meet a dancer so enticed by the cinema the question is will he get out alive? Finally ‘Deep End Dance’ will broadcast on Thursday, May 20th at 10.55pm and sees a mother and soon enjoy the dance of their lives above, and under water. All four short films will show on RTÉ Two.

All four RTÉ Dance On The Box 2010 films will screen continuously from 10.00pm on both Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd of May in Temple Bar's Meeting House Square. Admission to the event is free and unticketed. The outdoor screenings are organised in association with Temple Bar Cultural Trust.
