Ireland Prepares for Cannes 2010
10 May 2010 :

Alicia Duffy’s ‘All Good Children’ will premiere as part of this year’s Director’s Fortnight event, ‘One Hundred Mornings’ producer Katie Holly participates in the ‘Producer on the Move’ programme, in addition to Irish screenings and marketing of dozens of new Irish projects.

The 2010 Cannes Film Market runs from May 12 – 23 and will see a notable Irish presence. Ireland’s leading film producers will be travelling to the festival, which is the largest and one of the most important film markets in the world, to source finance for their upcoming feature films from with international film financiers, sales agents and film distributors.

This year there will be a number of new Irish films selling in the market including ‘The Guard’, directed by John Michael McDonagh which stars Brendan Gleeson (Into the Storm) and Don Cheadle (Iron Man 2); and Colm McCarthy’s chilling thriller ‘Outcast’, starring James Nesbitt (Five Minutes of Heaven), which received much critical acclaim when it premiered at the SXSW Festival in the US earlier this year. Conor Horgan’s apocalyptic ‘One Hundred Mornings’; David Keatings horror ‘Wake Wood’ and IFTA winning projects such as Conor McPherson’s supernatural thriller ‘The Eclipse’ and Ken Wardrop’s documentary ‘His & Hers’ are some of the other Irish films that will be selling at the market.

‘All Good Children’, Alicia Duffy’s debut feature will have its world premiere in Cannes on May 19th. Based on a novel by Sam Taylor, the film stars Jack Gleeson (A Shine of Rainbows) and newcomers Austin Moulton, David Brazil and Imogen Jones. Furthermore, ‘One Hundred Mornings’ producer Katie Holly from Blinder Films has been selected as one of the 23 film producers for The European Film Promotion's (EFP) ‘Producers on the Move' programme which provides an opportunity for networking on a European level and provides a platform to attract the attention of the international film industry and press.

The Irish Pavilion in Cannes, run by the Irish Film Board aims to be the central point for the Irish presence at the festival, promoting Irish film and Ireland as a film location. Some of the events include a European Co-Production lunch, a Scottish/Australia/New Zealand and Irish Co-Production reception and a reception co-hosted by Culture Ireland to celebrate new Irish cinema and Irish music at the festival. The Pavilion also provides an opportunity to endorse Irish production services and competitive tax incentives, whilst acting as a base for the Irish film industry and its guests attending the Cannes Film Festival and Market.

During the festival the Irish Pavilion will also host a number of panel sessions and networking events to take advantage of the unique opportunity to promote Irish film talent to the international film industry. Said panel events include ‘Ireland Open for Business’ which is being organised by Screen Producers Ireland (SPI) and the Irish Film Board. The discussion, which will take place at 5.00pm on Friday, May 14th, will see producers Macdara Kelleher (Colony), Dominic Wright (Parked), SPI Chair Gaby Smith and Irish Film Board CEO Simon Perry discuss the co-production and finance opportunities available in Ireland. Sunday, May 16th will see a panel entitled ‘Future of Film online/Video on Demand’ at 12.00pm and finally a panel event about ‘Adaptations’ will be hosted on Sunday at 5.00pm.

Northern Ireland Screen will once again host its networking lunch on Saturday, May 15th, the group’s head of marketing Moyra C. Lock telling IFTN: “Guests tell us it’s become pretty much a festival institution now!”

Simon Perry, Chief Executive of the Irish Film Board, commented: “The Cannes film festival is quite simply the most important event in the calendar for the film industries of the world and it’s a real boost for Ireland this year to be among the countries with a film in the official selection – a director’s first feature film, too.”

One of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the world, the Cannes Film Festival this year celebrates it’s 63rd anniversary. For more information about the festival visit www.festival-cannes.com.
