Where the Monsters Go

The Babelgum Online Film Festival’s Jury Prize for Best Narrative Short has been awarded to 'Where the Monsters Go', from Irish director Van Poynton (Rough Patch). The renowned international jury of Carlos Battilana, Jean-Pierre Bekolo Obama, Richard Linklater, Sally Potter, Annie Sundberg, Rick Watson and Jason Wishnow judged the shortlisted films and the winning shorts will screen as part of a ceremony during the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on Wednesday 28th April.

The 12 minute horror, ‘Where the Monsters Go’ is directed and co-written by Dubliner Poynton and stars Bradley Hall (Spider) and Ben Smith (Only Fools and Horses) as a pair of schoolboys in conflict over plans to break into a mysterious building. Liam Garvo (Ofelia) produced the short for Coral Bark Productions, London, where the film was shot on location, lensed by Ciro Candia (Casino Royale) and Steadicam operator Mike Scott (Eastenders).

Jury member Jason Wishnow commented on the winning project, saying: "I was honestly captivated by many of the films in competition, which were eclectic but all unique in style. Choosing a definitive winner from so many fun, surprising and technically accomplished shorts was the toughest part of an otherwise enjoyable process."

The Babelgum Online Film Festival was created to celebrate and reward the best in international independent short filmmaking by providing exposure and cash awards for emerging talent. More at www.babelgum.com

The Prodigal Son

The short western ‘Prodigal Son’ recently wrapped after a four day shoot in Dublin city. Its cast includes upcoming young actor Ryan Andrews (The Pool), Padraig Murray (The Guards) and US TV actor Mark Schrier (Sex and the City). Written and directed by playwright CJ Scuffins, ‘Prodigal Son’ marks his first foray into film.

The film tells the story of gangster's son, Joe, who's brought back from the dead by mysterious corporation Prodigal Inc after an untimely death. But Joe's mother Eileen instantly recognises that her son is no longer himself. Once a brutal enforcer, he's now a lost boy afraid of his own shadow. While Joe's father Denny forces his son to face off against psychotic teenage assassin The Boy, Eileen plots an even more sinister solution.

The film was produced by Hotel Darklight writer Eilis Mernagh and shot by award-winning cinematographer Piers McGrail (The Silver Bow, Only What I See Sometimes).

Mr Foley

The IFB-commissioned short 'Mr. Foley' was one of 38 films of over 2000 submitted selected to compete in the international competition at the Dresden International Short Film Festival last weekend and was awarded the Best 'Sound-Scape' Award from the European Centre for the Arts Hellerau. The short film starring Mark Doherty (A Film with Me In It) and produced by RedJam Productions is a dark comedy about a man who wakes up to find his every move sound tracked live in front of him.

Writer and directors D.A.D.D.Y. aka Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman (Solomon’s Song) worked closely with composer Steve Lynch on the music and Screen Scene sound department to achieve the sound design. ‘Mr Foley’ is produced by Mary McCarthy (Six Shooter).
