Boston Festival Celebrates Irish Filmmakers

A Song For Dad Tweet Irish craft was celebrated at the 11th Annual Irish Film Festival Boston recently where organisers hosted the New England premiere of Gabriel Byrne’s ‘Stories from Home’ which was attended by the veteran Irish actor and the feature docs ‘The Yellow Bittern’ and ‘The Bass Player: Song for Dad’ where both respective directors, Alan Gilsenan and Niall McKay were present. The Festival lineup also included a preview screening of Tom Hall’s feature ‘Wide Open Spaces’. Alan Gilsenan (The Asylum) was joined at the screening of ‘The Yellow Bittern – The Life and Times of Liam Clancy’ by Robbie O’Connell, the nephew of the late Irish ballad singer Liam Clancy, whose life is celebrated in the film. Furthermore Irish actress, Laura Way attended the screening of her short film directorial debut, ‘Sugar Stick’ which screened as part of the New Irish Shorts Program. Co-director of the festival, Dawn Morrissey, came away from the festival delighted, saying: “I am absolutely thrilled to have presented such a diverse group of Irish films this year, which truly represent the depth and breadth of Irish cinema.” “Collectively, these films and filmmakers celebrate the richness and vitality of the Irish culture in Ireland and around the world,” added Irish Film Festival, Boston Co-Director Peter Flynn. “These distinctive films exemplify Irish storytelling at its best, blending humor and tragedy, irreverence and gravitas, to capture and explore the complexities of the human experience - Irish or otherwise.” Founded in 1999, The Irish Film Festival Boston is the largest event of its kind outside of Ireland.
