8th Clones Film Festival Highlights Announced

Tweet The 8th Clones Film Festival will open on Wednesday 21st of October at 8pm. Celebrating local involvement in film, the night will include a screening of short films 'Sundown’ directed and produced by Eoin Ryan with local man Feidhlimidh Wrafter also producing and ‘The Chronoscope’ from writer/director Andrew Legge which features interviews with local writer Pat McCabe, Kevin Myers and is narrated by James Finlan, director of the first series of ‘Killinaskully’ and lecturer at the Huston School of Film & Media in Galway will present a workshop on Saturday, October 24th at 3pm in The Courthouse on ‘The Art of Pastiche in Filmmaking’ where he will examine how to maintain artistic originality while being true to generic conventions. This event will conclude with a screening of Finlan’s award winning film ‘Eireville’. James will also act as one of the judges for the ‘Francie’ awards on the festival’s closing night. Other film screenings include ‘Hiccup’, a short by Monaghan-born Derville Quigley (The Camping Trip), which was shot on her parents’ farm and was shortlisted for the Virgin Media Shorts awards this year. It features Monaghan actress Joanne Morgan (The Widow and Judge) and is set to be shown in over 200 cinemas in the UK. 'Hiccup' tells the story of a woman who is in labour whilst another has a severe bout of hiccups. Meanwhile in a meadow a sheep struggles to find the right way up. The film looks at the things within and beyond our control. Another film that will receive a screening at the festival is ‘Henry & Sunny’, a short film written and directed by Fergal Rock. Set in a time of unprecedented economic depression, ‘Henry & Sunny’ is the bittersweet tale of Henry, an unemployed clown, in love with the famous soap opera actress, Sunny Carmichael. The fifteen minute film which stars Portuguese Fado star, Paulo Bragança (Tráfico), Dorothy Cotter (Bel's Boys, The Clinic), and Tony Leddy (Slán agus Beannacht) was produced with assistance from the ADF Arts and Disability Awards Scheme. On Friday, October 23rd at 8pm, there will be a screening of S.M. Eisenstein’s ‘Battleship Potemkin’ in the Lennard Arms which will be accompanied by Cormac McCann live on piano with his newly composed movie score. Saturday, October 24th will see a screening of Dara McCluskey's 'Noisemaker' documentary about Jinx Lenon. This will be followed by a Q&A session with Dara, Jinx and Miss Paula Flynn before a live performance from Jinx and Miss Paula. The festival closes with the Sunday, October 25th with the ‘Francies’ award ceremony. 'Francie' awards will be awarded to winners in the Short film and Documentary categories and also the Scanbitz challenge entries whereby young filmmakers were given a small budget and 48 hours to make a short film. Both a jury vote and an audience vote will decide the winners. The awards will be followed by a session with 10th Avenue DJ. Festival committee member, Geraldine Zechner tells IFTN: “The festival is a homegrown affair with many locals involved. We’re very excited about the awards evening which is always a lot of fun and very unpredictable.
