Round Ireland With a
Fridge
A new feature film entitled ‘Round Ireland with a Fridge’, from UK based Fridge d’Or Films, has completed production. Directed by Ed Bye (After You’ve Gone), the film is written by Tony Hawks (Red Dwarf) - who also stars alongside Irish talent Valerie O’Connor (The Daisy Chain) and comedian Ed Byrne (The Cassidys).

‘Round Ireland with a Fridge’ tells the tale of a disillusioned TV personality who accepts a drunken bet that he cannot hitch-hike around the entire circumference of Ireland, accompanied by his fridge. He embarks on a bizarre, funny and at times uncomfortable journey, which opens his eyes to a more relaxed way of life, beyond the confines of his cosy London media world. Along the way, he falls in love with a feisty radio reporter, encounters a philosophical toiletries salesman and takes his fridge surfing.

Although predominately filmed in the UK, the film’s story is set all around Ireland and a number of key scenes for the project were shot in Ireland’s capital, Dublin.

Produced by Simon Sharkey (London’s Burning), the film is based on the 1997 book of the same name written by Tony Hawks. Hawks is also executive producer, screenwriter and stars as the lead actor. John Sorapure (Fat Slags) was the director of photography and the project was edited in the UK by Mark Whybourn (Kevin & Perry Go Large).

When asked why Dublin was chosen as a filming location the film’s producer Simon Sharkey tells IFTN simply that “Dublin can’t be doubled," and cited financial reasons for not shooting the entire film in Ireland. Crew filmed in the capital for three days and wrapped the film’s shoot there on June 17th. Various recognisable locations in Dublin city were used such as Temple Bar, the Ha-penny Bridge and the roof of City Hall.

Irish cast members in the film include Valerie O'Connor (The Daisy Chain), Ed Byrne (Are You Ready for Love?), Brendan Dempsey (Perrier’s Bounty), John Burke (Savage), Sean Hughes (The Butcher Boy), Tomas O’Suilleabhain (Fifty dead Men Walking), Noel O’Donovan (Eden) and Breffni Mckenna (Renaissance).

The producers hope to premiere the film at festivals in early 2010. For more information visit www.roundirelandwithafridge.com
