28 Sep 2009 :
Farrell & Vega in Triage
Danis Tanovic’s ‘Triage’ will open this year’s Rome International Film Festival (RIFF) on October 15. The film’s stars Colin Farrell and Paz Vega are expected to attend the opening night gala.

Having recently received its world premiere screening at the Toronto Film Festival in Canada, this will be the film’s European premiere.

’Triage’ tells the story of the impact of post-traumatic stress syndrome on a war photographer who returns to Ireland to be hit with the fact that his best friend has failed to come home. It was produced by Alan Moloney, Cedomir Kolar and Mark Baschet and the director of photography for the film was Seamus Deasy. Many of the film’s scenes were shot in and around Dublin.

The Rome International Film Festival, now in its fourth season, will feature 12 films in competition. ‘Triage’ will contend with other films such as Michael Hoffman’s ‘The Last Station’, a dramatic exploration of Leo Tolstoy’s wife starring Helen Mirren and James McAvoy; and Jason Reitman’s ‘Up in the Air’, starring George Clooney which tells the tale of a corporate downsizing expert whose beloved life on the road is threatened just as he is on the cusp of reaching ten million frequent flyer miles.

Six out of competition screenings will also occur throughout the festival including the Coen Brothers’ ‘A Serious Man’, a black comedy set in 1967 which centres on Larry Gopnik, a Midwestern professor who watches his life unravel. The festival will also present the world premieres of James Ivory’s ‘The City Of Your Final Destination’ about a doctoral student who has won a grant to write a biography of Latin American writer Jules Gund but who must first get through three people – Gund’s brother, widow, and younger mistress - so he can get authorization to write the biography.

Another out of competition film being screened is Radu Mihaileanu’s ‘The Concert’, about a Communist-era music director at Moscow’s Bolshoi ballet company who is snubbed upon his refusal to fire Jewish musicians. Nora Ephron’s ‘Julie & Julia’ will close the festival on October 23 with Meryl Streep present to introduce the screening. Meryl Streep will also be awarded the Marc’Aurelio award for acting during the festival.

The Rome International Film Festival will run from the 15th to the 23rd of October and will be based in the the Auditorium Parco della Musica, designed by Renzo Piano, and the Cinema Village. For more information visit www.romacinemafest.it
