Irish animation company, Brown Bag Films, came away from the 2009 Cartoon forum with the title of European Producer of the Year while Irish born David O'Reilly was awarded the Cartoon d’Or prize for his cartoon ‘Please Say Something’. Producers from all over Europe voted on Friday, September 25th at the festival, held this year in Norway.
Over the past 18 months Smithfield-based Brown Bag Films has produced 20 hours of computer animation for international broadcasters. They presented their new ‘Granny O’Grimm’ series, based on the 2008 IFTA-winning short film, during the Cartoon Forum. They tell IFTN “We were all delighted with the news, it’s great for the Irish animation sector and demonstrates the important role that animation plays in the creative economy.”
David O'Reilly's ‘Please Say Something’ is a ten minute futuristic short that deals with a troubled relationship between a cat and mouse. It walked away with the festival’s Cartoon d’Or award. The other finalists in the section included Nick Park’s ‘Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death’ and Merwan Chabane’s ‘Party Animals’. The jury members who choose ‘Please Say Something’ as the group’s winner were directors Serge Elissalde from France, Kari Juusonen from Finland and Ireland’s Tomm Moore.
The 2009 Cartoon forum this year celebrated its 20th anniversary and has, since its creation, seen projects financed worth 1.5Billion Euro. The 2010 Cartoon Forum will take place next year in Hungary. For more information as to this year’s festival visit www.cartoon-media.be
