‘Patrick’s Day’ writer/director Terry McMahon "floored" by positive audience response after opening weekend

'Patrick's Day' is currently in cinemas nationwide
The award-winning ‘Patrick’s Day’ opened nationwide on Friday, February 6th after a very successful festival run that seen it pick up numerous awards in Ireland and the US – with the films’ writer/director Terry McMahon stating that the positive response from cinemagoers in Ireland has "floored" him.

Speaking to IFTN after the film’s opening weekend, McMahon said: ‘The four and five star reviews from the heavyweight critics are very important for the film but it's the visceral responses from the audiences that has floored us. We have received hundreds of messages from strangers saying how overwhelmed they are by ‘Patrick's Day’ and the emotional outpouring on social media is stunning.’

The film has been acclaimed by many critics since premiering last year and has won awards such as:

  • Audience Awards at the Galway Film Fleadh and Cork Film Festival
  • The Maverick Award for Best Narrative Feature, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing at the Woodstock Film Festival
  • The Screen Directors’ Guild of Ireland Finders Series Award
  • Best Actor and Best Screenplay at the Hell’s Half Mile Film and Music Festival in Michigan

Lead actor Moe Dunford has also just been presented with a EFP Shooting Star Award.

‘Patrick’s Day’ follows Patrick, a 26 year old schizophrenic who falls in love with an alcoholic, suicidal air-hostess with the relationship they share transforming both of their lives. However, Patrick’s obsessive mother believes their misguided love is dangerous and so to pull them apart, enlists the help of a dysfunctional detective who will use his position to help her.

McMahon continued: ‘The only way a film that deals with these complex themes can go toe-to-toe against the Hollywood giants is through the support of those audiences so we're asking you to get off the couch, come to the cinema and become part of the conversation.’

‘Patrick’s Day’ is in cinemas now. For more information on the film go to: patricksday.ie.
