Hole in The Head
Seattle International Film Festival has announced the North American premiere of Dean Kavanagh’s Hole in the Head at its 49th edition which will take place May 11-21.

Following its theatrical release in Ireland and international festival screenings, Hole in the Head, a dark comedy-drama by Irish experimental filmmaker Dean Kavanagh, will have its North American premiere as part of SIFF’s Alternate Cinema section.

The film is an experimental narrative in which the protagonist re-stages his family’s home movies in order to recall a traumatic event. John Curran stars as a part-time projectionist and amateur filmmaker, John Kline Jnr, who is mute and suffers from missing time. He hires local actors Susan Moore (Lynette Callaghan) and James Kearnes (James Devereaux) to play his parents in a series of recreated home movies to investigate their unsolved disappearance 25 years earlier.

The Alternate Cinema section of the festival will host two screenings, at the SIFF Uptown Cinema and SIFF Film Center, followed by Q&A with director Dean Kavanagh and producer Anja Mahler. Kavanagh was selected as Ireland’s Berlinale Talent in 2023.

Filmed across Ireland during Covid lockdowns, Hole in the Head, Kavanagh’s first narrative feature, premiered in Ireland at the Galway Film Fleadh, and internationally at Festival Ecrã Rio de Janeiro, and has gone on to screen at festivals in Spain, Northern Ireland, Turkey, and Australia, and in cinemas across Ireland.

Melding new with old technologies and a film-within-a-film structure, the film proposes a hauntological discourse on autofiction, trauma and private ritual, and was named among the 50 Best Films of 2022 by The Irish Times, and Jessica Kiang (Variety, Sight & Sound).

“Seattle International Film Festival constantly boasts one of the most exciting programmes in the US, it’s a privilege to introduce Hole in the Head to their audience!” said director Kavanagh, on screening at SIFF.

Hole in the Head is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland under the Film Project Award.

Hole in the Head plays at SIFF Uptown Cinema on Tuesday May 16th at 8PM, and at SIFF Film Center on Wednesday 17th at 2.30PM.
