IFTA announces An Cailín Ciúin as Ireland’s entry for Best International Feature at Oscars® 2023

Selected by IFTA’s 2023 Irish Selection Committee, which includes producer and Emmy-nominated actress Roma Downey (Ben-Hur, Touched by an Angel), Oscar-nominated actor John C. Reilly (Chicago, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty), producer & Paramount TV EVP of International Strategy David Flynn (Bodkin, Seraphim Falls), Oscar-nominated director Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In America), director Aisling Walsh (Maudie, Song for a Raggy Boy) and actress Fionnula Flanagan (The Others, The Guard). The Committee was chaired by Academy CEO, Áine Moriarty.

Colm Bairéad's debut feature made history in Ireland recently as the first Irish language film to win the Irish Academy Award (IFTA) for Best Film. An Cailín Ciúin received 7 IFTAs overall including: director, actress, cinematography, editing, production design, and original score.

The film is resonating with audiences around the globe who are deeply moved by this incredibly beautiful and unique film, with its powerful storytelling and coming-of-age drama that explores the meaning of family through the eyes of a neglected young girl Cáit, played by Catherine Clinch.

An Cailín Ciúin has quickly become one of the most critically and commercially successful Irish films of recent years. The film has been described by The Observer as “one of the most exquisitely-realized films of the year” and by The Guardian as “a jewel” that “already feels like a classic”

Speaking about the selection of An Cailín Ciúin, IFTA Academy CEO Áine Moriarty said: “The Irish Academy is delighted to announce An Cailín Ciúin to represent Ireland for the 95th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.  This is such a unique and beautiful film that captures your heart from the outset, and leaves you profoundly moved.  How proud we are to submit this outstanding Irish language film into the Oscar competition, to compete with the best in the world, as we know this story will resonate with international audiences, beyond the borders of language, and no doubt with American Academy Members too”.

Writer/Director, Colm Bairéad and Producer, Cleona Ní Chrualaoi of Inscéal said: "We are honoured beyond words that An Cailín Ciúin / The Quiet Girl has been selected to represent Ireland. Our heartfelt thanks to IFTA and its selection committee. We have always believed in the idea that an Irish-language film could stand shoulder to shoulder with the best of world cinema and we feel so proud to be representing our country and our language in this way. It has been an extraordinary privilege adapting Claire Keegan's ‘Foster’ to the big screen and we can't wait to introduce our film to more and more members of the Academy as The Quiet Girl continues its roll-out on the international stage. None of this would have been possible without the vision of TG4, Screen Ireland, and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, who co-funded the Cine4 feature film initiative, which has created a new wave of Irish-language cinema that is being recognised around the world".

Based on Irish author, Claire Keegan's acclaimed story, Foster, An Cailín Ciúin is an intricate, deeply felt coming-of-age drama that delves into the meaning of family through the eyes of a neglected young girl. Set in rural Ireland in 1981, the film follows Cáit (Catherine Clinch) as she is sent from her overcrowded, dysfunctional household to live with distant relatives for the summer. She is welcomed with open arms by Eibhlín (Carrie Crowley), but her husband (Andrew Bennett) keeps Cáit at arm’s length. Slowly, however, a warmth grows within this makeshift family and Cáit begins to blossom in their care. But in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth.

An Cailín Ciúin was produced by Cleona Ní Chrualaoi of Inscéal, as part of the Cine4 funding scheme for Irish-language film, in partnership with Screen Ireland, TG4, and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI), and the film is also in receipt of the Irish Government’s Section 481 tax incentive.

The Quiet Girl had its World Premiere at this year's Berlinale where it won the Grand Prix of the Generation Kplus International Jury for Best Film. It was also the recipient of the Audience Award at the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival earlier this year and was chosen as the Best Irish Film at the Dublin Film Critics’ Circle Awards. Recently, it won the Audience Choice Award of the International New Talent Competition at Taipei Film Festival, Taiwan.

Désirée Finnegan, Chief Executive, Fís Eireann/Screen Ireland said: “It has been incredible to see the overwhelmingly positive reception that An Cailín Ciún has received from audiences, critics and the international industry since its world premiere at the Berlinale earlier this year. Colm Bairéad has created a beautifully cinematic, delicate and nuanced film with An Cailín Ciúin. The film deserves to compete with the best of world cinema in the race for the Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Colm, producer Cleona Ní Chrualaoí and the entire creative team on this selection".

Dúirt Mary Ellen Ní Chualáin, Bainisteoir Coimisiúnaithe TG4: "Comhghairdeas ó chroí le Inscéal, le Colm agus Cleona, an cliar agus gach duine a bhí páirt acu in An Cailín Ciúin as a bheith roghnaithe mar iontráil na hÉireann do na Oscars.  Ba mhaith liom comhghairdeas a dhéanamh freisin le Máire Ní Chonláin, Eagarthóir Coimisiúnaithe an scannáin agus lenár comhleacaithe i bhFís Éireann agus Údarás Craolacháin na hÉireann. Tá An Cailín Ciúin tar éis dul i bhfeidhm go mór ar gach duine a bhfaca é go dtí seo, anseo sa mbaile agus le lucht féachana ar fud an domhain sa mBreatain, an Eoraip, an Astráil, An Nua Shéalainn agus An Téaváin. Is léir go bhfuil ag éirí le scéim Cine4 cineama na Gaeilge a fhorbairt agus tá TG4 thar a bheith bródúil as sin".

Celene Craig, CEO of the BAI commented: “The BAI congratulates An Cailín Ciúin for its selection as the Irish entry to the Oscar International Feature Film category. The continued success of this Irish language drama, both at home and internationally, demonstrates the power of storytelling to captivate audiences and is also an example of the breadth of talent working in Ireland’s audiovisual industry today. We were delighted to have supported the film through our Sound & Vision funding Scheme”.

An Cailín Ciúin has been released in Ireland & the UK by Break Out Pictures and Curzon. Madman Entertainment are handling the New Zealand/Australia release of the film.

The Oscar® Best International Film contenders will next be shortlisted to 15 international finalists on Wednesday December 21st which will then be ultimately shortlisted to the final 5 Oscar® Nominees in that category on January 24th. The 95th Academy Awards ceremony (the Oscars®) is currently scheduled to take place on Sunday 12th March 2023 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and will honour the best films of 2022

World Sales for The Quiet Girl are being handled by Bankside Films.
