UK sales and distribution outfit Blue Finch Films has boarded worldwide rights to Northern Irish folk horror, Mandrake.

The film is the latest project to come through Northern Ireland Screen’s New Talent Focus scheme, previous projects include Sundance-selected Bad Day For The Cut and The Survivalist starring Mia Goth.

Mandrake follows probation officer Cathy Madden, who is given the task of rehabilitating notorious killer ‘Bloody’ Mary Laidlaw back into society after twenty years of jail. Cathy has always believed that every client deserves a shot at redemption, but her beliefs are firmly tested when two children disappear near Mary’s farm.

The female-led project is the directorial debut from Lynne Davison and produced by Marie-Thérèse Mackle (Derry Girls series 3) and Paul Kennedy (Nightride), from a script by Matt Harvey (An Act of Defiance). Scottish BAFTA-winner Deirdre Mullins (The Dark Mile) plays Cathy, and Derbhle Crotty (Notes on a Scandal) stars as ‘Bloody’ Mary Laidlaw. Seamus O’Hara (The Northman), Jude Hill (Belfast), and Roisin Gallagher (The Dry) round out the cast.

“We’re thrilled to be representing Mandrake and bringing this fantastic folk horror to international buyers,” said Mike Chapman of Blue Finch Films. “Lynne Davison has created a bold examination of motherhood through a genre lens and is certainly a Director to watch out for.”

Blue Finch Films will be starting international sales on the film during the European Film Market. Mandrake is financed by Northern Ireland Screen and post-production house Yellowmoon.

Blue Finchs international slate includes BFI backed thriller Homebound, home-invasion thriller Barbarians starring Iwan Rheon, and the SXSW 2021 closing night film, Charli XCX: Alone Together.
