15th Annual San Francisco Irish Film Festival Line-Up Announced
13 Sep 2018 :
Celebrating 15 years of bringing independent Irish film to the Bay Area, the line-up for the 2018 San Francisco Irish Film Festival has been revealed.

Running from September 27th – 29th, ‘Inclusion’ is the theme of this year’s festival at the Delancey Street Theatre. Attendees can look forward to an exciting program of contemporary films that feature characters in search of friendship, love, and acceptance after being alienated from their loved ones and communities.
Director Pat Collins’ award-winning ‘Song of Granite’ will open the three-day event on Thursday, September 27th.  Ireland’s entry for the foreign language category at the Academy Awards earlier this year, the black & white biopic tells the story of renowned ‘Sean-nós’ singer Joe Heaney. Enigmatic and complex, Heaney’s devotion to his art came at a huge personal cost.
The screening will be followed by an Opening Night Reception, which will be hosted at The Consulate General of Ireland in San Francisco.
The ever-popular evening of Short Stories, Tall Tales’ is back again this year, featuring a diverse selection of new shorts.
‘Little Bird’, ‘Early Days’, and ‘Time Traveller’ centre on main characters who feel excluded, but through acts of kindness they’re welcomed back into a family, a place or a community again.
The short selection also includes: ‘QED’ about a couple forced to find a new way forward under difficult circumstances, and ‘Rhinos’, a charming story of two people who form a deep connection despite a language barrier. Lastly, the festival will screen Oscar winning director Benjamin Cleary’s IFTA winning short ‘Wave’, which tells the story of a man who wakes from a coma speaking a fully formed but unrecognizable language.
Saturday will kick off with a screening of the powerful, Afghanistan-set animation, ‘The Breadwinner’. From the studio that made the Oscar-nominated 'The Secret of Kells' and ‘Song of the Sea’, the film tells the story of Parvana, an 11-year-old girl who disguises herself as a boy to support her family after her father is wrongfully arrested. Directed by Nora Twomey and executive produced by Angelina Jolie, the inspiring tale is based on Deborah Ellis’ bestselling novel of the same name, and is a celebration of the healing power of stories.
Director Frank Berry’s award-winning film ‘Michael Inside’ will close the 15th annual festival on Saturday 29th at 8pm. The heart-breaking movie about social exclusion tells the story of Michael McCrea, an impressionable teenager whose life changes dramatically when he is imprisoned for holding a bag of drugs for a friend’s older brother. Developed with former prisoners from the Irish Prison Pathways Program, it takes a realistic look at the circumstances that lead to Michael’s conviction and how prison affects him.
The San Francisco Irish Film Festival is supported by the Consulate General of Ireland, Irish Film Institute, Culture Ireland, Residential Builders Association and Ranger Pipelines.
