Saoirse Ronan Receives 2018 Santa Barbara Award
06 Feb 2018 : Nathan Griffin
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) awarded Irish actress Saoirse Ronan with their coveted Santa Barbara Award on Sunday night. The award is given each year to a member of the entertainment industry who has made a sizable contribution to film.

Ronan’s most recent performance, in Greta Gerwig’s ‘Lady Bird’ - for which she is Oscar nominated, was said to be the deciding factor in awarding the Carlow native with prestigious achievement.

Speaking about Ronan’s most recent performance, SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling said:

“In Lady Bird, Saoirse Ronan has once again proven that she is a force of nature and one of her generation’s most exciting young talents. She embodies her characters with a poignant accuracy and ease every time she appears on screen.”

Earlier this year, Ronan celebrated her third Academy award nomination at just 23 years of age, with her first nomination coming at the age of 14 for her role in ‘Atonement’, and in 2015 for her leading role in Parallel Films’ ‘Brooklyn’. The actress also registered her first major win at the Golden Globes back in January – picking up the ‘Best Actress in Musical/Comedy’ award for her performance in ‘Lady Bird’.

Ronan’s other notable film credits to date include: ‘The Lovely Bones’, ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’, ‘Hanna’, and ‘The Way Back’.

Saoirse now joins a list of distinguished recipients of the award, which includes Daniel Day-Lewis Julianne Moore, Oprah Winfrey, Sylvester Stallone, Jennifer Aniston, Geoffrey Rush, and Kate Winslet.

Ronan will now be setting her sights to the Academy Awards next month, which take place March 4th.
