Joel Schumacher’s drama based on the real-life crime reporter Veronica Guerin airs tonight, exploring the events leading up to and following her murder in 1996.
In a bid to expose Ireland’s crime lords, Guerin (Cate Blanchett) attempted to establish links between Dublin's drug trade and infamous gangster Martin Cahill
Schumacher directs a script from Mary Agnes Donoghue (Jenny's Wedding) and a cast which includes Gerard McSorley as John Gilligan, Brenda Fricker as Bernie Guerin and Gerry O'Brien as Martin Cahill. Jerry Bruckheimer (Deliver us from Evil) produces.
The film was nominated for eight IFTA Awards in 2003; Best Irish Film, Best Supporting Actress (Brenda Fricker), Best Supporting Actor (Ciaran Hinds & Gerards McSorley), Best Cinematography (Brendan Galvin), Best Hair/Make-Up (Dee Corcoran & Ailbhe Lemass), Best Costume Design (Joan Bergin), and UGC Cinemas Best Irish Film, for which it received the award.
