26 Jul 2017 : Katie McNeice
At a press conference held yesterday, July 25th, organisers of the Toronto International Film Festival made its first announcement of the year in relation to the upcoming programme.

Among Irish titles are ‘The Breadwinner’ the latest animation to come from Irish animation house Cartoon Saloon. Nora Twomey directs the title based on a script by Anita Doron (The Lesser) who co-writes the screenplay with Deborah Ellis, based on Ellis’ own novel of the same name, which was published in 2000.

Producers are Anthony Leo (What’s up Warthogs!), Tomm Moore (Song of the Sea) and Paul Young (Puffin Rock). Executive producers are Angelina Jolie, Mimi Polk Gitlin, Karim Amer, Jehane Noujaim and Gerry Shirren.

‘The Breadwinner’ follows Parvana, a girl growing up in Afghanistan in 2001. Following her father’s arrest, she dresses as a boy in order to work and provide for her family. Together with her best friend Shauzia, she risks discovery to try to find out if her father is still alive.

Angelina Jolie, Executive Producer:
"I know they will do justice to the richness, creativity and strength of Afghan culture and to little girls like Parvana. Millions of young girls like Parvana are growing up today under oppression or conflict and helping their families to survive in those conditions. This story is a reminder of the immense value of their contribution."

Mary Shelley
Next up is Parallel Films’ ‘Mary Shelley’ directed by Haifaa Al Mansour, which tells of the love affair between poet Percy Shelley and eighteen year old Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, which resulted in Mary Shelley writing the infamous ‘Frankenstein’ novel.

Al Mansour is also credited for additional writing, with the script coming from Emma Jensen (The Ghan). Amy Baer, Ruth Coady and Alan Moloney produce the project, which stars Masie Williams (Game of Thrones), Elle Fanning (The Neon Demon) and Stephen Dillane (Zero Dark Thirty).

Disobedience
This Element Pictures and Braven Films title marks the English language debut for director Sebastian Lelio (Gloria), who has co-written a script with Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Ida) based on the novel by Naomi Alderman.

It revolves around Ronit (Rachel Weisz), the estranged daughter of a rabbi, who returns from New York to the Orthodox Jewish neighbourhood she grew up in North London, following her father’s death. Her arrival causes upheaval in the quiet community. The film also stars Rachel McAdams (Spotlight) and Alessandro Nivola (American Hustle).

Frida Torresblanco, Ed Guiney and Rachel Weisz produce.

Other Titles
Ciarán Hinds features in ‘Woman Walks Ahead’ directed by Susanna White and produced by The Bedford Falls Company. Jessica Chastain leads the cast as Catherine Weldon, the real-life artist who became the confidante of Sitting Bull after travelling to Dakota to paint his portrait.

‘The Shape of Water’ by Guillermo del Toro stars ‘Maudie’ lead Sally Hawkins as a mute cleaner named Elisa, who discovers a classified secret experiment in a government laboratory. This otherworldly fairytale is set against the backdrop of the Cold War, circa 1962.
