‘Fís Na Fuiseoige’ Wins Best Documentary At This Year’s Irish Film Festival London
2016-11-15 11:00 : Nathan Griffin
The winners of the Irish Film Festival London 2016 have been announced.

Irish title ‘Fís na Fuiseoige,’ written and directed by NUI Galway journalism tutor Aodh Ó Coileáin won the accolade for best documentary and was awarded the prize at the Irish Embassy in London.

Aodh Ó Coileáin, Writer & Director:
“It is an honour to be selected for this award in the centenary year of the Easter Rising. The rebellion was the culmination of a cultural renaissance, a reawakening of old myths, sagas and traditions, many of them attached to the land of Ireland and surviving for thousands of years.  I hope ’Fís na Fuiseoige’ and this award will inspire students and those seeking to tell stories in new media, on different platforms, with ever developing technologies and methods of reaching people.”

The newly appointed TG4 Ardstiúrthóir Alan Esslemont congratulated Ó Coileáin and the creators of the documentary on their achievement.

Alan Esslemont, Ardstiúrthóir TG4:
“The riches of Irish poetry and the visual creativity of TV programmes are a natural fit, and this work provides ample proof of this.”

The film will be showcased on TG4 on Tuesday, 15th November 2016 at 9.30pm.

‘Fís na Fuiseoige’, written and directed by Aodh Ó Coileáin, made a successful debut at the Dublin International Film earlier this year. It then went on the win best cinematography at the Earth Day Film Festival in San Francisco in April as well as being screened at the Irish Arts Centre in New York and a Chicago film festival earlier this month.

‘Fís na Fuiseoige’ focuses on the deep love of the home-place held by the people of Ireland and its reflection in national poetry and literature. A year in the making and using one of the first fully automated remote controlled helicopters in Ireland, it offers a stunning visual and poetic exploration of the vast diversity of local places in Ireland.  We get a birds-eye perspective, illuminated by the deep, inner poetic vision expressed in the writings of this country’s leading Irish-language poets who have written about the importance of place.

It is a visual exploration of the landscape of Ireland, and a story of the close relationship between the Irish people and the land.  It is a meditation on the Irish landscape as expressed in the writings of recent and contemporary Irish language poets, including Seán Ó Ríordáin, Máirtín Ó Direáin, Biddy Jenkinson, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, Jackie Mac Donnchadha, Gearoid Mac Lochlainn and Louis de Paor, among others.

Seán Finnan, Film Ireland Writer:
“Aodh Ó Coileáin’s beautifully intimate portrait of language and place is a reminder again of the importance of the language in the Gaelic Revival, the cultural rebellion that was the catalyst for the later rebellion. In serving as a pool of traditions that were lost under Anglicization, the language was used as a means of re-imagining, of conceiving of a new identity,”

The film was produced by Colm Hogan and Dr Marina L. Levitina of Counterpoint Films, and funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, TG4 and part funded the BAI Sound and Vision Fund.
