An Taoiseach Enda Kenny to speak at SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas

US Film Festival South by Southwest (SXSW) has announced that An Taoiseach Enda Kenny is to speak at the festival on Sunday, March 15th.

His visit to SXSW is on the heels of the Irish Consulate office that opened in Austin, Texas in October 2014 – becoming the first European state to open a consulate in Austin.

In this session, the Taoiseach will discuss how the Irish economy has been growing rapidly and how Ireland's reputation is shaping up to become a location for launching start-ups and a leading tech and innovation hub.

Irish co-production ‘The Visit’ is also slated to screen at the festival. Co-produced by Venom Film, with support from the Irish Film Board, ‘The Visit’ (from the team behind the hit documentary ‘His & Hers’) is a creative documentary that poses the question, what would happen if we were to be visited by a being from another world? The film presents this hypothetical scenario to experts from around the world who have already dedicated their lives to preparing for such an event.

‘The Visit’ recently screened in the World Documentary Competition category at the Sundance Film Festival, and is set to be released here later this year.

The 2015 SXSW Festival will run from March 13th-21st in Austin, Texas.

DIT Film Festival to run from March 2nd to March 12th 2015

The DIT Film Festival is back for its second annual appearance, running from March 2nd to 12th at DIT Aungier Street, Dublin 2.

The festival promises a mixture of talks, workshops, masterclasses, and an awards ceremony, with all events free and open to the public.

The festival kicks off on Monday March 2nd with a screening of the Filmbase Masters’ ‘Poison Pen’, including a talk on “How To Make A Feature Film” with some of the crew of the film after it screens.

On Wednesday March 4th the festival will host a joint session with the Fingal Film Festival. This will see the team behind the Fingal Film Festival talk about their festival and how applicants can enter and be part of it. The Fingal team will be screening some international and Irish shorts including ‘Not Anymore: A Story Of Revolution’, ‘Taimse im Chodladh’, ‘Shoot’, ‘Skunky Dog’, ‘Piece At The Bottom’, and ‘Volkswagon Joe’.

On Monday March 9th there will be a dedicated VFX workshop called ‘The Greenscreen’. This will be a practical workshop dedicated to the art of Greenscreen that will teach participants how to setup, light and add in effects in post-production. Places are strictly limited to DIT students, with potential attendees asked to email reel@socs.dit.ie with their name and student number.

Tuesday March 10th there will be an outdoor screening of a classic Irish film. A public vote will decide between ‘The Commitments’, ‘War Of The Buttons’, ‘The Guard’, ‘Into The West’, and ‘The Snapper’.

On Wednesday March 11th there will be an Irish Cinematographers Session. This will see the organisers joined by a number of directors of photography to discuss the Irish industry and how people can work their way into it.

The festival closes on Thursday March 12th with The DIT Student Media Awards. This is a celebration of the great work produced in DIT, featuring a black tie event in Gleeson Hall. Wine and food served on the night with an afterparty nearby.

These events are open to both DIT students and the public.
