Acclaimed film 'Frank' inspired by people with mental health issues says Lenny Abrahamson
First Fortnight, Ireland’s only mental health arts festival, this week extends to selected venues nationwide as part of two weeks of arts events aimed at challenging mental health prejudice and discrimination.

Lenny Abrahamson’s acclaimed film ‘Frank’ – starring Michael Fassbender and Domhnall Gleeson – will be screened in Dublin, Limerick, Waterford, Galway, Cork, Wicklow, Laois and Kildare on January 6th. The film will be preceded by ‘No More Secrets’, a new documentary on mental health-related street art in Ireland. The film is produced by First Fortnight and Mental Health Ireland and was directed by Aidan Kelly and Wissame Cherfi and follows the making of street art pieces in Limerick, Letterkenny, Dublin and Portlaoise.

Lenny Abrahamson will attend a post-show discussion in Dublin following an 8pm screening of Frank at the Pavilion Theatre in Dun Laoghaire.

He will be joined by long-time collaborator Stephen Rennicks, who composed music for ‘Frank’, ‘Garage’ and ‘What Richard Did’, among other works.

‘Frank’ and ‘No More Secrets’ will be screened in the Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoghaire (January 6th); Lime Tree Theatre, Limerick (January 7th); Garter Lane Arts Centre, Waterford (January 10th); Town Hall Theatre, Galway (January 12th); Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray (January 13th); Triskel Christchurch, Cork (January 14th); Dunamaise Arts Centre, Portlaoise (Janauary 14th) and Riverbank Arts Centre, Newbridge (January 14th).

The screenings are being held in association with See Change, the national mental health stigma reduction partnership, and Access Cinema.

Of the programming of ‘Frank’ in the First fortnight festival, Lenny Abrahamson said: ‘Many of the musicians who inspired ‘Frank’ were people who battled with mental health issues and somehow managed to transform those battles into wonderful art. While ‘Frank’ doesn’t draw any easy conclusions about the link between mental illness and creativity it is underpinned by a view of people that values all their aspects, however difficult or extreme. The film feels like a great fit for First Fortnight. I’m a big fan of the festival and I’m really happy to be involved for the second year running.’

John Saunders, director of See Change, added that the campaign ‘is delighted to partner with First Fortnight and bring the message of the festival to cinemas across the country with screenings of Lenny Abrahamson’s acclaimed movie ‘Frank’ in the hope of sparking a national conversation on the mental health problems that can touch any one of us.’

Alongside this week’s film events, First Fortnight continues with live music, theatre, visual art events and a sports talk.

The full line-up can be viewed at www.FirstFortnight.ie. The 2015 First Fortnight festival is partnered by Mental Health Reform; St Patrick’s Mental Health Services; Mental Health Ireland and See Change, the National Mental Health Stigma Reduction Partnership.
