Programme Released for 2014 Waterford Film Festival
03 Nov 2014 : Seán Brosnan
The 8th Waterford Film Festival will run between the 7th -9th of November.

After a summer of reviewing hundreds of entries the programme for this year is set. Films arrived in from around Ireland, UK, Europe, USA and Canada.

There will be an eclectic mix of film genres screened at this year’s festival from first time filmmakers to award winners. Garter Lane Arts Centre is hosting this year’s event and this year will be screening 36 films.

Garter Lane Arts Centre will give a full cinematic experience, with Blu-ray or DVD screened through a full HD Multi Media Projector incorporating two 330 watt projection lamps for colour and clarity. The full-sized cinema screen allows films to be screened in widescreen 16:9 format, and guarantees the optimum cinematic experience with Dolby surround sound.

This year there will be a work shop with David Burke, Head of Universal Pictures Ireland. The workshop will be chaired by filmmaker Siobhan Cleary, hosted in Garter Lane and is sponsored by Greyfriars Art Gallery and provides an opportunity for filmmakers to find out more about film distribution in Ireland from a major studio.

The festival will also be screening a short documentary called ‘Rainbow Chaser’ by Connor Heffernan and an award winning short film called ‘Skunky Dog’ by a local and first time director James Fitzgerald. After both screenings there will be a Q&A session from the filmmakers.

Other short film highlights screening at the festival include ‘Stolen’ (directed by Yvonne Keane), ‘Kaleidoscope’ (directed by Rob Burke) and ‘Soulless’ (directed by Mark Smyth).

The screenplay competition is now in its seventh year and application screenplays were received from both beginners and professionals. The winner will be announced at 8pm on Sunday the 9th of November. The award will come with a cash prize of €500 and will also include five days access to filming equipment and editing facilities from FILMLAB.

Festival Director Stephen Byrne said: ‘This is a great year for the festival! For the first time, Garter Lane Arts Centre will be hosting and all films will be screened on a full cinema screen. Filmmakers are coming from around the country, UK and as far as the U.S. to attend the festival and I look forward to meeting them all. There is great mix of films on during the weekend, something for everyone to enjoy.’
