Irish Film New York Showcases Classic and New Irish Films
19 Sep 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
'Love Eternal'
A mixture of new and classic Irish films will be screened at this year’s Irish Film New York, proving that the industry has produced smart, emotional and unforgettable films over the years, and continues to do so.

Irish Film New York aims to help Irish films and filmmakers find a market in the United States by fostering partnerships between Irish and US-based film institutes. The annual three day festival will showcase six critically acclaimed contemporary Irish films at NYU’s Cantor Film Center and will hosts a selection of public filmmaker Q&As, industry panel discussions and filmmaker receptions. The 2014 festival will take place in the Cantor Film Center, 36th East 8th St., New York from October 2nd through 5th.

This year, IFNY will be opening with ‘Gold’ in the film’s North American premiere. The film sees Ray (David Wilmot) return to the town he grew up in to reunite with his daughter (‘Game of Thrones’’ Maisie Williams), twelve years after her mother (Kerry Condon), dumped him. The film will screen on Friday 3rd October with director Niall Heery in attendance.

IFNY is also excited to host a talk with Oscar-nominated writer & director, Jim Sheridan, on Saturday October 4th, 2014 and screenings of three of his award-winning films on the same day. ‘My Left Foot’, which won Oscars for Daniel Day-Lewis and Brenda Fricker, the thrilling ‘In the Name of the Father’, based on the true story of Gerry Conlon, and family drama ‘In America’, based roughly on Sheridan’s own experiences of living in America, will all be screened.

Also to be screened in the Saturday programme is ‘Love Eternal’, starring Robert de Hoog and Polyanna McIntosh in a story about a man who explores the thin line between life and death. Written and directed by Brendan Muldowney (‘Savage’), it is based on a novel by Ken Oishi and was filmed in Cork.

On the Sunday of the event, the documentary ‘Broken Song’ will receive its North American premiere at IFNY. The film examines the lives of street poets, hip-hop artists and songwriters from north Dublin who express themselves through song and rap.

‘Poison Pen’ and ‘Out of Here’ will also screen on Sunday 5th October, the final day of Irish Film New York. The former sees a celebrated author (Lochlainn O'Mearain) blackmailed by an editor (Aoibhinn McGinnity of ‘Love/Hate’) into writing for a tabloid gossip magazine. McGinnity will attend the screening. ‘Out of Here’ sees Ciaran, a college dropout, return to Dublin after a year of travelling and struggling to reconnect with his family and friends. The award-winning director Donal Foreman will direct the film.
