Open Casting Call for Northern Ireland’s ‘A Christmas Star’
04 Jun 2014 : Aisling Newton
Young and budding actors are being called upon to audition at the open castings for ‘The Christmas Star’, Northern Ireland’s first ever Christmas feature film, made by Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People.

A host of film and television professionals including Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan will lend their support to the ground-breaking film production that will be filmed in Belfast and will engage with hundreds of young people from across Northern Ireland. ‘A Christmas Star’ marks the first Northern Ireland film project that Neeson has been involved in since 2008, when he shot ‘Five Minutes Of Heaven’ with James Nesbitt. Neeson and Brosnan previously worked together in the 2006 movie ‘Seraphim Falls’.

Others involved in the feature include Oscar winning film producer, Gareth Ellis Unwin (The King’s Speech), award winning film composer Patrick Doyle (Brave, Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Music Supervisor Maggie Rodford (The King’s Speech, Anna Karenina), actress Paula Malcolmson (Deadwood, Ray Donovan), camera operator Ian Fox (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man), producer Iain Smith (Children of Men, Mad Max), and production manager Terry Bamber (The Man from U.N.C.L.E, Skyfall). Oscar-winning screenwriter and ‘Downton Abbey’ creator Julian Fellowes will also help to develop the script. The industry professionals will mentor young people throughout the film production process from script to screen, giving invaluable insights to the world of filmmaking and sharing their wealth of experience to help develop young people’s skills across various film disciplines ranging from directing, acting and production to script editing, film composition, and costume/makeup.

Cinemagic patrons, Ros and John Hubbard (The Commitments), of Hubbard Casting, are launching the search for young talent for the film from June 6 - 8 in Ballymena, Belfast and Newry and invite young people with all levels of experience to audition.

Open castings for young females aged 9-12 and young males aged 9-15 will take place on Friday, June 6 from 3.30pm – 7.00pm in The Braid: Ballymena Town Hall, Museum & Arts Centre, Ballymena; Saturday, June 7 from 10.00am – 4.00pm in The Europa Hotel, Belfast, and on Sunday, June 8 from 12pm – 6pm in the Canal Court Hotel, Newry.
