TG4 has announced its upcoming highlights for the Yuletide season. The seasonal line-up includes historical documentaries 'Gan Dídean' and ‘Dún Chaoin, Daichead Bliain’, a reflection on the year’s sports highlights in ‘Seó Spóirt’ and Mick Lally’s last TV appearance, ‘Cairdeas’
Historical documentaries are the mainstay of the Christmas schedule for the Irish language broadcaster. December 23rd will see the documentary 'Gan Dídean' which will examine the personal stories of people who have lived, or live on the margins of society. It follows in particular the work of the Galway Simon community. On Christmas Day ‘Dún Chaoin, Daichead Bliain’ will examine a village on the west coast and at the short life of young fisherman, Tomás Keane who drowned tragically on his way home to the Blaskets. Finally on December 27th TG4 will chronicle the life of T.K. Whitaker who was declared the Greatest Living Irish Person by the 2002 ESB/Rehab People of the Year Awards.
On December 22nd audiences will get a chance to see Mick Lally’s last television room in the short film, ‘Cairdeas’. The short examines the links between chess and friendship. Directed by Kevin Glynn the film co-stars Eamonn Draper and Joe Greaney.
Where sports are concerned, a one hour documentary entitled ‘Na Chéad Fight Clubs’ looks at the history of fight clubs in New York and will show on December 28th. TG4 will also take a look back at the year in sport on ‘Seó Spóirt’ and will offer audiences another chance to see the All-Ireland finals. We also have an all-star line-up on Ceist GAA le Hector wbeing captained by Ger Loughnane and Paidí Ó Sé.
Finally, those interested in the arts can see the story behind ‘Tommy McCarthy: Handing Down the Tunes’ on December 27th which will cover the life of Clare born musician Tommy McCarthy. There will be music from other Irish artists including U2, Christy Moore, Tommy Fleming, Donal Lunny. The final of performance reality show ‘Glór Tíre’ will take place during Christmas week also, the exact date is TBC. Finally, the 30th of December will play host to feature documentary, ‘An tÉireannach Fáin’ which tells the story of ‘Man of Aran’ director Robert Flaherty, one of the twentieth century’s most influential cinematic figures.
