A US remake of ‘Love/Hate’ is currently in development, with Irish American author and screenwriter Dennis Lehane penning the adaptation for Showtime.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the show will be set in a “gritty Hawaii that tourists don't see”.
Writer Dennis Lehane has previously written novels such as Shutter Island, Gone, Baby Gone and Mystic River, all three of which were adapted into feature films. ‘Shutter Island’ was directed by Martin Scorsese and starred Leonardo Di Caprio in the lead role while ‘Gone, Baby Gone’ was Ben Affleck’s acclaimed first foray into directing. ‘Mystic River’ was directed by Clint Eastwood and was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for its’ actors Sean Penn and Tim Robbins, respectively.
Lehane has also written for television shows such as ‘The Wire’ and ‘Boardwalk Empire’ and also wrote the screenplay for crime drama ‘The Drop’, a 2014 feature film starring Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini.
‘Love/Hate’ has proven quite an international commodity show over the last couple of years, with the IFTA winning show selling to countries like Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Israel, Brazil, Norway and Latin America. It has also sold to HULU, Netflix and Amazon in the USA, and Channel 5 in the UK.
The sixth season of the show is in development and will broadcast on RTÉ in 2016.
