IFTA to Host Family Screening of Animated Film ‘Song of the Sea’
17 Oct 2014 : Seán Brosnan
Irish Film & Television Academy Members are invited to the First Look Family Screening of animated Irish Film 'Song of the Sea' in Dublin on October 25th.

The film, which will not be released in Irish cinemas until next year, is directed by Tomm Moore and is Kilkenny-based studio Cartoon Saloon’s eagerly-awaited follow-up to their Academy Award-nominated and IFTA-winning feature ‘The Secret of Kells’, which won international acclaim and received multiple awards worldwide.

’Song of the Sea’ screened last month at the Toronto International Film Festival and has already secured deals with StudioCanal for the UK and Ireland, with Haut et Court and Orange Cinéma Séries for France, O Brother Distribution for Benelux, Svensk Film for Sweden and Denmark, as well as with GKids for North America. The film has also garnered very positive reviews with Variety heralding it as ‘a marvel to behold’ and IndieWire calling it ‘one of the most blissfully beautiful animated films ever made’.

The film, with Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan, David Rawle, Lisa Hannigan, Pat Shortt and Jon Kenny leading the voice cast, is based on Irish folklore. It follows Ben and his little sister Saoirse, the last ‘seal-child’, as they go on a journey to return to their home by the sea. Saoirse must find her voice and sing the ‘Song of the Sea’ in order to save all of fairy kind from being lost forever.

Ireland’s Cartoon Saloon produced with art-house animation producers in Europe that included Luxembourg’s Melusine Prods., Belgium’s The Big Farm, Denmark’s Norlum and France’s Superprod. The film received backing from the IFB, BAI and TG4 among other sources.

The script for ‘Song of the Sea’ was developed by Moore and Irish screenwriter Will Collins (‘My Brothers’). The backgrounds were designed by French artistic director Adrien Merigeau. Bruno Coulais and Irish band Kila, who collaborated on ‘The Secret of Kells,’ composed the original score.

The First Look Family Screening of ‘Song of the Sea’ will be held in Dublin on Saturday, October 25th with Irish Film & Television Academy Members invited to attend.
