Irish Actress Gabrielle Reidy Dies Aged 54
16 Oct 2014 : Seán Brosnan
Irish stage and screen actress Gabrielle Reidy has died aged 54. She passed away at her London home this week after being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

IFTA-nominated Reidy was born in Malahide, County Dublin and began her theatre career in 1971 appearing at the Abbey Theatre in ‘The Shadow of a Gunman’. Over the next 18 years, she featured in many Irish theatre productions in both the Abbey and the Gate Theatre including ‘Footfalls’, ‘Phaedra’, The Death of Humpty Dumpty’ and ‘Peer Gynt’. In 1989, she appeared in her Abbey solo show ‘Fragments of Isabella’, based on the diary of a Holocaust survivor, a role which garnered her much acclaim.

A move to London soon followed and Reidy’s prolific career continued over the next two decades with the actress appearing in West End productions such as ‘The Awakening’, ‘Same Old Moon’, Much Ado About Nothing’ and ‘Desire Under The Elms’, with Reidy meeting her future husband Gary Lilburn in the latter production.

While Reidy was well known for this extensive theatre work, she carved out a distinguished career in film and television as well working in many critically acclaimed dramas both in Ireland and the UK.

Perhaps best known to Irish audiences as series regular ‘Meg’ in popular RTÉ drama ‘The Clinic’ when it aired, Reidy also held the titular role of Monica Hall in RTÉ’s ‘Never The Same Again: Monica Hall’.

Television roles in the UK also came knocking for the actress and she starred in such BBC shows as ‘Doctors’, ‘Waking The Dead’, ‘Holby City’ and ‘Out Of Hours’ – and such ITV shows as ‘Scott and Bailey’ and ‘The Bill’. She also starred in the Emmy-winning ‘Prime Suspect IV’ which co-starred Oscar-winner Helen Mirren.

Reidy has also starred in many highly regarded films and her film credits include Alan J. Pakula’s IRA drama ‘The Devils Own’ co-starring Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt, Peter Webber’s Oscar-nominated drama ‘The Girl with the Pearl Earring’ co-starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth, and John Irvin’s ‘Robin Hood’ co-starring Patrick Bergin and Uma Thurman. She also played Frances Cahill in Joel Schumacher’s biopic ‘Veronica Guerin’ opposite Cate Blanchett.

She has also worked with many esteemed Irish film directors such as Tom Collins (in ‘Kings’) and Thaddeus O’Sullivan (in ‘December Bride’) and it was her stunning supporting turn as Eileen Harris in Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘What Richard Did’ that landed her with an IFTA nomination in 2013.

Out of respect for her illustrious career, the audience at the Abbey Theatre gave a standing ovation in her memory at the end of the performance of Mark Rowe’s ‘Our Few And Evil Days’ on Monday night.

Gabrielle Reidy is survived by her husband Gary Lilburn, who is also an actor, and their son Finn.
