Barry Keoghan and Rachel Griffiths for ‘Mammal’
01 Aug 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
‘Mammal’ is the latest feature from Irish director Rebecca Daly, who previously helmed ‘The Other Side of Sleep’. Her new project, which was granted funding from the Irish Film Board and from the Luxembourg Film Fund, is a love story about a woman who takes in a homeless child after her own son goes missing.

This week, the feature has seen a further development when the following casting news was revealed. Twenty one year old Dublin actor Barry Keoghan, best known for his role as ‘Wayne’ in the fourth season of ‘Love/Hate’, tweeted the news: “Finally announce I've been cast in leading role with the brilliant Rachel Griffiths in a film called 'MAMMAL' directed by Rebecca Daly.” Daly will play the lead and Keoghan will play the child she brings into her home.

Rachel Griffiths is an Australian actress, known for her roles in ‘Six Feet Under’, ‘Blow’ and ‘Saving Mr Banks’ to name but a few credits.

The casting news for Keoghan reveals that his acting career is continuing to grow in success. Besides ‘Love/Hate’, Keoghan has also had a number of roles in feature films such as ‘Stalker’, ‘Life’s a Breeze’ and ‘Stay’. Most recently, he starred opposite Michael Fassbender and Brendan Glesson in crime drama ‘Trespass Against Us’ as well as Belfast-set ‘’71’ and ‘Traders’, both with fellow ‘Love/Hate’ star Killian Scott.

Mammal will will be produced by Macdara Kelleher through Fastnet Films and written by Daly and Glenn Montgomery. Co-producers will be Calach Films in Luxembourg and Rinkel Film in The Netherlands. The film which will shoot in Dublin and Luxembourg in October was selected as part of the first Berlinale Residency, a programme organised by the Berlin International Film Festival to support writer/directors develop their new projects.

Funded by the Irish Film Board, Luxembourg Film Fund, BAI, TV3 the Dutch Film Fund and the Dutch Production Incentive, 'Mammal' will be brought to Irish audiences by Wildcard Distribution with Cinéart distributing the film in BeNeLux countries and Berlin based Picture Tree International (PTI) taking world sales rights.
