Oscar-Nominee Catherine Keener Joins Irish Director John Carney’s ‘Can A Song Save Your Life?’
27 Jun 2012 : By Eva Hall
Catherine Keener
Irish director John Carney has added another Academy Award-nominee to the cast of his upcoming feature film ‘Can A Song Save Your Life?’. American actress Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich) has been cast as the estranged wife of Mark Ruffalo, who plays a down-on-luck music producer.

Keener joins fellow nominees Ruffalo, (Avengers Assemble) Keira Knightley (Atonement) and Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), as well as Maroon 5 frontman and ‘The Voice’ (US) coach Adam Levine and ‘Gavin and Stacey’ star James Corden.

Keener and the rest of the cast are due to begin shooting in New York in the coming weeks. Carney will direct the romantic drama, with ‘Knocked Up’ filmmaker Judd Apatow on board to executive produce with Sam Hoffman, Anthony Bregman and Tobin Armbrust.

The story will take Keira Knightley’s character to New York with her boyfriend, as the pair try and make it in the music business. When her boyfriend hits the big time, he subsequently dumps her, forcing her to rely on her best friend, played by Corden.

Keener was nominated for an Academy Award in 1999 for her role as Maxine Lund in Spike Jonze’s ‘Being John Malkovich’. She also earned an Emmy nomination in 2008 for ‘An American Crime’, and recently finished ‘Captain Phillips’ with Tom Hanks, which is scheduled for a 2013 release.

Carney rose to fame in 2006 when his Irish feature ‘Once’ picked up an Academy Award for the soundtrack written by co-stars Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova.
