Irish feature film ‘Good Vibrations’ and Oscar-winner Terry George’s ‘Whole Lotta Sole’ are among the features that will have their Irish premieres as part of the 12th annual Belfast Film Festival, which will get underway on May 31.

Boasting a number of Oscar and IFTA-winners among the line-up, the festival will show 104 screenings and events in 12 different venues over 10 days.

As previously reported on IFTN, ‘Good Vibrations’ will open the festival and receive its world premiere on May 31. The Belfast-filmed feature tells the story of record shop-owner Terri Hooley, who opened the shop at the height of The Troubles in Belfast in the 70’s.

Richard Dormer (A Mighty Celt) plays the role of Hooley in the Colin Carberry and Glenn Patterson-written biopic. Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn directed the feature, with Andrew Eaton, Chris Martin and David Holmes producing. The film will be screened at Belfast’s Ulster Hall.

Oscar-winner Terry George will give an Irish premiere to his latest film ‘Whole Lotta Sole’ at the festival in June, one year after his Oscar-winning short ‘The Shore’ premiered at the festival in 2011.

‘Whole Lotta Sole’ is a comedy starring Brendan Fraser (The Mummy) and Colm Meaney (Parked). The gala premiere in the Waterfront Hall on Sunday June 10 will hold a civic reception for George to mark his Oscar success.

Northern Ireland-based thriller ‘Shadow Dancer’ will have its UK and Ireland premiere on June 6 at the festival. ITV News’ political editor Tom Bradby penned the film, with ‘X Files’ star Gillian Anderson, Andrea Riseborough (W.E.) and Clive Owen (Derailed) starring. It charts the story of an IRA volunteer forced to become an informant by MI5. It will screen in the Movie House Cinema on Dublin Road.

Other highlights of the festival include IFTA Award-winner Stephen Rea in conversation with BBC Arts Extra’s Marie-Louise Muir, which will take place at Queen’s Film Theatre on Friday June 1. Drama ‘Jump’, currently in post-production, will also screen at the festival on Friday June. Belfast-born Martin McCann stars alongside Nichola Burley.

Launching the festival programme yesterday (May 9), Michele Devlin, director of the Belfast Film Festival, said this year’s festival is the most exciting year yet: “The quality and significance of the screenings and events that we are able to stage reflects the growing prominence of the economic and cultural contribution of the local film industry.”

The Belfast Film Festival runs from May 31 to June 10 this year. It is funded by Northern Ireland Screen supported by DCAL and by Belfast City Council. For full programme and ticket details visit the Belfast Film Festival homepage.
