Lough Key

Lough Key has for many centuries drawn people to its spectacular views, abundant wildlife, historic buildings and evocative islands.

This beautiful landscape is steeped in a rich history, beginning with Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, continuing through the 12th Century rule of the MacDermot Clan and up to the 1600's when the Lough Key lands were granted to an English family under the Cromwellian settlement. The Kings resided at Rockingham, as their estate was known, until 1957 when a huge fire destroyed their mansion, although it was the early 1970s before the ruins were finally raised to the ground.

Now after major development the historic backdrop encompasses a landmark cluster of unique attractions serving the needs of a 21st century visitor with a new lakeside centre providing an ideal gateway for gentle leisurely activities or more energetic pursuits in the Park. Whatever you choose, it is the perfect place to do as much or as little as you like.

Lough Key offers a wonderful connection with history and nature. Reacquaint yourself with nature on one of the many trails along the water’s edge and throughout the 350 hectares of parkland from ancient Ringforts and Souterrains to 19th century follies, bridges, canals and numerous walks and trails through woodlands, bog garden and forests.

Break up your day by enjoying the spectacular views from our Lakeside Café. Indulge yourself with our gourmet homemade delights, confectionery and ice-cream, while overlooking the mesmerising Castle Island.  Our Lakeside Café is open every day. You can browse around our Gift Shop for that special memento of your visit.

The Moylurg Room at Lough Key boasts stunning lake views with the unique backdrop of Castle Island.  Tailored function packages can be arranged to meet your individual requirements.

Allow yourself to be taken back in time as you are guided through the 19th century servant tunnels by the Game Keeper on the Lough Key Experience.  Let the stunning views from the top of the Moylurg Viewing Tower take your breath away and get lost among the foliage as the Tree Canopy Walkway gently rises through the trees.

Stay in the Caravan and Camping Park for a few nights and take time to explore the 350 hectare estate.
