Martello Tower Sutton

History

The Martello Tower Sutton is beyond doubt an exceptional property.  In 1804, towers were built in Ireland and England to protect the coastlines against invasion by Napoleon Bonaparte. Their purpose was to provide what were in those days ‘bomb proof’ towers from which fire could be directed at ships.
The Towers never fired their cannons in anger, as Napoleon never invaded Ireland or England.  However, it is believed that the Towers acted as a deterrent, as Napoleon had every intention to invade England using Ireland as a “back door” bridgehead.  Martello Tower Sutton was the first tower to be built in Dublin and is referred to in the annals as Tower No. 1.

The Tower

After many years of restoration and refurbishment the Tower offers its guests a truly unique self catering option with a combination of luxury and excitement as well tremendous views of the bay and surrounding areas.   It is located on the North coastline of Dublin Bay Ireland, known locally as Red Rock Sutton which is about 12 kilometres from Dublin city centre.
The Tower is available for private and corporate rental, either as a holiday destination, or a private function venue.  It is also an ideal property to utilize as a film location with spectacular 360o views of Dublin’s coastline from the tower, because of its extraordinary location it is also possible to film from the air.

Accommodation

Accommodation consists of three levels: Two bedrooms and a bathroom on the lower level with a balcony surrounding the exterior: Living area with another balcony terrace overlooking the bay on the middle level: And a modern kitchen, utility room and a second bathroom, and a dining room,  offering breathtaking 3600 views from roof level.

The living area, which is circular, is a luxurious living space with wooden floors, and soft lighting. The restored stone work that extends from floor level upwards to a domed brickwork roof gives the room a wine cellar ambience.

From the living area, access to the upper level is made via the stone stairwell.  These narrow stairs in their original state open up into the kitchen / dining room that boasts a magnificent 360° view of Dublin bay and surrounding areas.  With the feature of the original cannon plinth in the centre of the room the kitchen, with its modern hand crafted burgundy units, and all mod cons, has seating at an extending dining table for up to 12 people.

The lower level bedrooms are accessible either via the narrow internal stone staircase, or from another external entrance doorway at ground level.  At this level there are two bedrooms (‘The James Joyce Room’ and ‘The Napoleon Room’) and a bathroom, which is decorated in floor to ceiling mirror tiles.

We believe that Martello Tower Sutton represents the best and most sympathetic refurbishment of any Tower in Ireland, a truly unique structure.
