Sea
The Sea Cat provides the fastest crossing to Northern Ireland from Stranrear in Scotland to Belfast, sailing 5 times a day and taking 90 minutes. A Liverpool to Belfast service runs every second day with Norse Irish Ferries. Stena Sealink and P&O Ferries operate ferries to Larne from Stranrear and Cairnryan, taking up to 140 minutes and sailing 10 to 15 times daily.

RURAL
Glens of Antrim
Formed by the valleys of nine rivers, this area is one of the most beautiful areas in the North. Glenariff Forest Park has trails through woodland, gorges and past waterfalls. At the foot of Glenarrif is Red Bay.
Carnfunnock Country Park
Carnfunnock park offers some lovely gardens for walking and a maze in the shape of Northern Ireland.
COASTAL
Antrim Coast Road
This spectacular scenic road, constructed in the 1830’s stretches from Larne to Cushendall. The Ulster Way is a popular walking trail along the coast.
Giant’s Causeway
A World Heritage Site and probably Northern Ireland’s most recognisable geographical treasure. Approximately 37,000 basalt columns reach out towards the sea in this geographical phenomenon, formed 60 million years ago.
Carrick-a-Rede Ropebridge
Perched 80ft above the sea, this bridge made of planks and wire is a popular tourist attraction.
Sheep Island
Located just off the Causeway coast, Sheep Island is a cormorant colony. Boat trips are available in the area.
Rathlin Island
Accessible from Ballycastle, Rathlin is shaped like an “L” and its inhabitants lead a simple, fishing and farming, lifestyle. Its cliffs attract a wide variety of birdlife. The white limestone and black basalt of the island prove to be an amazing sight.
Fair Head
Close to Ballycastle, this clifftop area provides spectacular views of Rathlin Island.
Torr Head
This is the closest point on the mainland to Scotland. Great views of the sea and the Scottish coast are available from the headland.
Copeland Island
Two miles north of Donaghdee and accessible from the town, the largest of the Copeland islands contains the ruins of a chapel. It has a small population.
Skerry Islands
One mile north of Portrush the Skerry Islands consist of six islets which are popular for fishing and bathing.
Islandmagee
A seven by two mile peninsula of basalt cliffs, situated at Lough Larne.
Lough Neagh
Situated between the counties of Derry, Tyrone, Antrim and Armagh, Lough Neagh is the largest lake in the British Isles covering 400 sq km. Myth has it that the lake was formed when Fionn Mac Cumhaill picked up a sod of earth and threw it into the Irish Sea, forming the Isle of Man.
Murlough Bay
The most beautiful bay along the coast with crashing cliffs and calming meadows.
Beaches
There are fine beaches at Carnlough, Whitepark Bay, Cushendun, Ballygally,along with the popular resort of Portrush .
HISTORICAL
St. Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast.
The interior of this Neo-Romanesque cathedral contains dazzling mosaics and the tomb of Lord Carson.
City Hall, Belfast.
A domed, late Victorian, building containing lavish interiors including the hand-carved oak-panelled council chamber. It is made of Portland stone in the style of the British Empire.
Grand Opera House, Belfast.
With its exotic and opulent interior, the opera house is a must-see. It includes eastern deities and elephant heads within an oriental theme.
Dunluce Castle
Positioned on the edge of the coastline cliff, this roofless 13th century castle was the fort of the chiefs of Antrim, the McDonnells.
Carrickfergus Castle
This massive 12th century Norman castle is the best preserved of its kind on the Island. It is a spectacular sight, containing fascinating exhibits, and overlooks the harbour.
Dunseverick Castle
At one stage the capital of the joint kingdom of Scotland and Antrim, Dunseverick Castle now lies in ruins.
Belfast Castle
A Scottish Baronial Castle located at Cave Hill. It also has garden walks.
Holestone, Doagh
A 5ft standing stone that attracts couples who prove their love by holding hands through a hole in its middle.
INTERIORS
Crown Liquor Saloon, Belfast.
The Crown Liquor Saloon is owned by the National Trust. The Victorian interior features mosaics, stained glass, marble-work and a long bar.
URBAN
Belfast City
This industrial city grew up around the River Lagan and Belfast Lough. More than a quarter of the North’s population live in the capital, which spreads out from its centre at Donegal Square. It is surrounded by hills and boasts amazing architecture including the Grand Opera House, St. Anne’s Cathedral, City Hall and the modern Waterfront Hall. The Parliament House of Stormount lies 8km from the centre. Around the Queen’s University area are the Botanic Gardens and the Ulster Museum.
Bushmills
This town is most famous for its distinctive whiskey, Old Bushmills, made from a blend of a single grain and a single malt. The distillery provides an interesting tour.
Ballycastle
A pleasant harbour town, Ballycastle plays host to the Oul Lammas Fair each August, when horses and ponies are traded. The Glenshesk River runs down from the Knocklayde Mountains to the sea at Ballycastle. The ruins of Bonamargy Friary are located just outside the town.
Cushendall
This town has been christened the “Capital of the Glens”, as it is located at the meeting of three glens. Its sights include the red sandstone Curfew Tower and Layde Old Church founded by the Franciscans in 1306.
Portrush
This is a popular resort town with three fine beaches. There is a geographical nature reserve here noted for fossils. Surfing and water-sports are popular in the area.
Larne
Larne is the busiest port in Northern Ireland, taking most of its entrants from Scotland. The Scottish coast is often visible from the promenade. The ruined 16th century Older fleet Castle is situated in the harbour.The town is the starting point for the Antrim Coast Road.
Carrickfergus
This seaside town is most noted for its spectacular castle overlooking the harbour. It also holds an annual medieval festival, Lughnasa. |
