A24 have revealed the first trailer and poster for The Green Knight, the latest film from American writer-director David Lowery (The Old Man and the Gun, A Ghost Story, Pete’s Dragon, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.)
The Hollywood feature film, which features both Ardmore Studios and Tipperary’s Cahir Castle as shooting locations, is a dark fantasy reimagining of the 14thCentury Chivalric Romance, ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’ and is financed by US-based companies A24 and Bron Studios. Lowery also produces alongside Toby Halbrooks and James M. Johnston through Sailor Bear, together with Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Pictures (Nightflyers, Gretel & Hansel, Fate: The Winx Saga).
“Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger, and tester of men.
Along the way, Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger…”
In the original tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Gawain, the youngest of King Arthur’s knights and also Arthur’s nephew, accepts a challenge from a giant Green Knight that any man can strike him with his axe if that knight will, in turn, take a return blow in a year and a day. Gawain accepts and swiftly decapitates the eponymous Knight. However, the Knight reattaches his head and tells Gawain he will return in exactly a year to return the favour.
Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, and Ralph Ineson also star with Ireland’s Barry Keoghan playing the mysteriously named “Scavenger.”
The Green Knight currently does not have an Irish release date but will be released in the USA on My 29th by A24.
