Cillian Murphy and Steven Knight have reunited on the film set of Peaky Blinders, which has started production in the UK.
Production has commenced on the highly anticipated feature film continuation of the multi-award-winning gangster saga. Infamously set in the lawless streets of Birmingham in the 1900s, Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as the iconic “Tommy Shelby” in the film written by the show’s creator, Steven Knight, who produces alongside Patrick Holland, Cillian Murphy, and Guy Heeley.
Speaking about filming getting underway, creator Steven Knight said: “I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II. The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders.”
“It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full on Peaky Blinders at war.”
Speaking about the reprisal of his role, Cillian Murphy said: “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me…It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”
Directed by Tom Harper (Heart of Stone, Wild Rose), the film will be made for Netflix in association with BBC Film. Executive producers on the project include Tom Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Caryn Mandabach, and Andrew Warren.
Director Tom Harper said: "There’s a great feeling of anticipation and excitement amongst our outstanding cast and crew. We’re grateful to the fans for getting us to this point and believe this next chapter is going to deliver something extraordinary."
“When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,” added Harper. “Peaky has always been a story about family - and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”
The casting of Barry Keoghan has previously been confirmed, with the Oscar nominated Irish actor set to star alongside his Oscar winner compatriot Cillian Murphy. The full cast is yet to be confirmed but other high profile names include Rebecca Ferguson and Tim Roth.
Keoghan’s new films are currently on the festival circuit this autumn, starring in Andrea Arnold's Bird and Irish co-production Bring Them Down, which premiered at Toronto International Film Festival on 9th September and won Best Picture at Fantastic Fest 2024. Murphy will next be seen in Small Things Like These, released by Lionsgate on November 1st.
