SXSW takes place March 11-19 in Austin, Texas
The South by Southwest Film Festival has announced their 2016 line-up with Irish co-production ‘I Am Not A Serial Killer’ and Northern Irish documentary ‘I Am Belfast’ both selected to screen along with John Michael McDonagh’s new film ‘War on Everyone’.

The SXSW festival presents the best in new independent music and film every year in Austin, Texas with acclaimed Irish films like ‘Patrick’s Day’ and ‘Frank’ both screening there in recent years.

During the nine days of SXSW Film, 139 features will be shown, with additional titles forthcoming. The complete lineup will consist of 89 World Premieres, 13 North American Premieres, and 8 U.S. Premieres, selected from over 2,450 feature-length submissions. First-time filmmakers account for 52 films, continuing the SXSW tradition of showcasing independent discoveries from up-and-coming directors.

‘I Am Not A Serial Killer’ is directed by Billy O’Brien and adapted by O’Brien from the novel of the same name by Dan Wells. Christopher Lloyd (‘Back to the Future’), Max Records (‘Where the Wild Things Are’), and Laura Fraser (‘Breaking Bad’) star in the feature, which charts the story of a teenage boy hunting for a supernatural serial killer in his snowbound Midwestern town. The film shot in the US early last year with post-production taking place in EGG in Dublin. IFTA-winning DoP Robbie Ryan (‘Slow West’) shot as well as produced the film for Floodland Pictures, with the Irish Film Board providing partial funding. ‘I Am Not A Serial Killer’ is screening in the Narrative Spotlight strand of SXSW.

Director Billy O'Brien said “I am delighted to be chosen by SXSW, with its history of picking interesting and innovative films and its quirky mix of both Film and Music”.

Screening in the Visions strand is Mark Cousins acclaimed Northern Irish documentary ‘I Am Belfast’. The film has so far screened at the Belfast Film Festival, the Galway Film Fleadh and in competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, receiving positive notices from publications such as Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, with the latter describing the film as “a charmingly offbeat tribute to a big-hearted city”.

‘I Am Belfast’ is a co-production between Hopscotch Films and Canderblinks Films and received partial funding from Northern Ireland Screen. Shot by Christopher Doyle, scored by David Holmes and produced by John Archer and Chris Martin, ‘I Am Belfast’ is a unique look at the city and portrays Belfast as a free spirited woman and a walking tour guide. Distributed by Warsaw-based sales outlet New Europe Film Sales, the film will be released to UK/Irish cinemas on April 8th.

Also screening at SXSW this year is John Michael McDonagh’s new film ‘War On Everyone’. The film, which is scheduled to make its’ world premiere at Berlinale this month, will play in the Narrative Spotlight. ‘War on Everyone’ stars Michael Peña and Alexander Skarsgård as corrupt cops looking to blackmail and generally stitch up all the felons they cross paths with. Unluckily for them, they run up against someone who’s even more dangerous and unscrupulous than they are. Or is he?

The film, which was shot early last year in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is writer/director John Michael McDonagh’s first feature set outside Ireland with ‘The Guard’ and ‘Calvary’ both shot in Galway and Sligo, respectively. He won three IFTA Awards for his work on ‘The Guard’ (Rising Star, Best Script and Best Director) and one for ‘Calvary’ (Best Script) with both films picking up Best Film.

The SXSW Film Conference and Festival runs March 11-19, 2016 in Austin, Texas.
