First ever Wrongful Conviction Film Festival to take place in June
22 Apr 2015 : Seán Brosnan
Festival will take place at Griffith College on June 27, 2015
The first ever International Wrongful Conviction Film Festival hosted by the Irish Innocence Project will take place at Griffith College on the 27th of June 2015.

There will be eight films screened during the day – most of which have never been shown in Ireland or have had limited distribution – and concluding with a special screening of ‘In the Name of the Father’ with Jim Sheridan and Gerry Conlon’s family.

David Langwallner, founding director of Irish Innocence Project at Griffith College said: ‘This is a spectacular line-up of films featuring Q&As with actors, directors or exonerees for most of the films. As a film buff and someone who is professionally committed to increasing public awareness of wrongful convictions as a human rights issue, this is a film festival that should not be missed.’

In addition, there will be film screenings, with Q&As following, of:

  • ‘Convicted’ with Tony Goldwyn, who also created ‘The Divide’ television series, and Betty Anne Waters, on whose story the film is based
  • ‘The Central Park Five’ with David McMahon, who co-directed the film along with Ken Burns and his wife Sarah Burns
  • ‘The Exonerated’ with director Bob Balaban, exoneree Sunny Jacobs and actor Aidan Quinn

Daylong tickets for the film festival are €35 or €10 for an individual screening. For more information, go to Innocenceproject.ie.

The film festival is part of a two-day program hosted by the Irish Innocence Project at Griffith College; on the 26th of June, the Irish Innocence Project International Conference on Wrongful Convictions, Human Rights and the Student Learning Experience will take place at Griffith College. Highlights of the program include a welcoming address by Dr. Mary McAleese, keynote address by Gareth Peirce, who successfully worked to overturn the convictions of the Guildford Four and Birmingham Six, and a talk by the Hon. Mr. Justice Frank Clarke. Early bird registrations for both days available until 30 April is €100.
