‘The Canal’ Kills at Tribeca
24 Apr 2014 : Aisling Newton
The most talked about feature at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC this week is ‘The Canal’, written and directed by Ivan Kavanagh and posted at Egg Post Production.

The Irish film has been taking New York by storm as critics and filmgoers alike are praising the new psychological horror story, which had its world premiere at the opening weekend of the festival. Starring Rupert Evans (Hellboy) and IFTA nominee Antonia Campbell-Hughes (3096 Days, Albert Nobbs), the film tells the story of a family which consists of a mother, father and young son who move into a period house by a canal. Cinema Archivist David William (played by Evans) suspects his wife, Alice, is cheating on him. As David’s suspicions grow, a shadowy figure of a man, who resembles William Jackson, starts to appear to him and David becomes convinced that this “evil supernatural presence” that inhabits his house, never ever wants him or his family to leave.

The Irish, British, Dutch co-production was described by critics as “dark, brooding and scary”; "...the constant bizarre imagery and tremendous sound design helped deliver in spades...” The New York Times reported “Ivan Kavanagh employs a conspicuous sound design in which doors, zippers, projectors, shutters and even a detective’s acid reflux can jar you out of your seat.” Supervisor for the films soundtrack was Patrick Drummond with Aza Hand (Gold, Controra) acting as the sound designer. The entire film was mixed by Hand at Egg Post Production on their Neve DFC film console in the feature theatre. Colm Mullally produced the film’s disturbing FX and near-musical industrial backgrounds at Egg, which blended into the nightmare horror with frightening ease. Nik Panteris brought Kavanagh’s nightmarish vision to life with his adept colourist skills. Inspired by the line “Lurking in the shadows”, he designed a natural look, referencing the suspenseful films of the 70’s, whilst selectively allowing glimpses of the underlying terror to emerge. Strong blacks and enhanced color was used by the creative cinematography by Piers McGrail (Kelly & Victor, Grassland).

‘The Canal’ also features Hannah Hoekstra (Hemel) and Steve Oram (Sightseers). The film was produced by Anne Marie Naughton for Park Films with Treasure Entertainment’s Rebecca O’ Flanagan and Robert Walpole as executive producers. Shot in Dublin during summer 2013, the film was co-produced by Vaughan Sivell and Sander Verdonk, with Robin Hill (Sightseers) editing. Funded was provided by the Irish Film Board and the Film Agency for Wales.

A total of 58 shorts are scheduled to screen at the Tribeca Film Festival including a number of Irish shorts such as ‘Scratch’, directed and written by Philip Kelly and co-written by Liam Ryan; ‘Rubaí’, written by Antoin Beag O’Colla, directed by Louise Ní Fhiannachta and produced by Gemma O’ Shaughnessy for Magamedia Teo; and ‘Incident Urbain’, written by French/Irish director John Lalor. John Butler’s 'The Stag' (which is renamed 'The Bachelor Weekend' for the American market) recently secured a US deal with Tribeca and will also receive its US premiere at the festival.

John Carney’s feature ‘Begin Again’ (formerly Can A Song Save Your Life?) will close the 13th annual festival on April 26 at the BMCC Tribeca PAC. ‘Begin Again’ is a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who come to New York when he lands a deal with a major label. The film also features Mark Ruffalo, Hailee Steinfeld, James Corden, Yasiin Bey, Cee Lo Green and Catherine Keener. It is due for release by The Weinstein Company in July.

Tribeca’s 33 jury members have been divided into categories to judge the film festival’s competitions, which include a World Narrative and World Documentary Competition, Emerging Competition categories, Short Film Competition categories, the Bombay Sapphire Award and the Nora Ephron Prize.
