BAI Launches Strategy Statement 2014 – 2016
24 Feb 2014 : Aisling Newton
The BAI launched their Strategy Statement for 2014 – 2016 today, Monday, 24 February 2014, at the Authority’s headquarters in Dublin.

The Strategy Statement seeks to build on the previous strategy and marks the next steps in the BAI’s evolution as a regulator.

The Broadcasting Act, 2009 requires the BAI to produce a statement of strategy every three years, reflecting the statutory functions of the Authority, the Contract Awards Committee and the Compliance Committee. The new strategy will set out a number of objectives for the next three years and include seven strategy goals such as: influencing and communicating; ensuring diversity; ensuring plurality; strengthening transparency and accountability; facilitating learning and development; promoting responsible broadcasting and empowering audiences; and strengthening governance and organisational development.

The launch was attended by the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte TD.

Bob Collins, Chairperson of the BAI, said: “The three-year workplan is a key document for the organisation as it gives practical effect to the goals expressed in the Strategy. It also enables the BAI and stakeholders to track progress and to be held to account in terms of the programme of work delivery.”

Due to a rise in the levels of external television content – as opposed to Irish-made content – the key challenge for the BAI has been to remain relevant as a broadcasting regulator.

In 2013, the BAI’s first strategy document concluded with a review of funding for public service broadcasters; the introduction of a new Code of Fairness, Objectivity and Impartiality in News and Current Affairs; the revision of the General and Children’s Commercial Communications Codes; and the introduction of the new Archiving Scheme.
