Sixteen South requires a Series Director 

Job title: Series Director 
Project: 80 x 11 minute 2D animation series. 

Please do not apply unless you have 3 series of credits for an international or UK terrestrial broadcaster, at Series Director level.

Sixteen South is a company that creates and produces television for children around the world. Founded in Belfast in 2007 by Colin Williams the company has partnered with major names in children's entertainment co-producing shows with Sesame Workshop, The Jim Henson Company and the BBC.

The company has already won over 20 major international television awards including a BAFTA award and two Emmy nominations, and in business they have been ranked among the UK's top indie producers by Televisual. They have been awarded the 2016 Children’s BAFTA for Independent Production Company of the Year.

Sixteen South are currently preparing for the production of an 80 x 11 minute animated series. The environment and design style is rich, vibrant and original, using collaged designs.

Animation will take place in CelAction and we will work with our talented animation team who have recently completed production of the second series of Lily’s Driftwood Bay.

We are looking to recruit an experienced director, with extensive multi-episodic experience.The director will creatively oversee all aspects of production from script review and thumbnails through to delivery. Scripting and artwork will begin in 2016, boarding and animation in early 2017.

Music will be an important part of the series – we envisage a specially composed song as a feature of every other episode. There will also be a couple of seasonal specials.

The director will be key to the success of this long-running and hopefully returning series. They will work with the line producer, animation director, and animation leads x 4, art director and team. We have in house post-production facilities including sound studio.

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

To ensure that the series is delivered to the required creative standards and, in conjunction with the other members of the production team, within a given schedule and budgetary constraints.

To deliver a series of a very high standard, which fulfils the requirements of the brief and maintains the standards expected by the company.

To have input into and awareness of the budget and schedule for the series.

be involved in some aspects of the pre-production, including:

  • supervision of the audio dialogue cut
  • script evaluation
  • production of thumbnails and supervision and sign off, of the storyboard and animatic processes
  • working with the Art Director, manage the approval of art-work to the standards required, in advance of submission to client for approval

Where practicable, to be involved, together with the Line Producer and the EP, in the selection of the crew and sub-contractors for the programme.

Working with the Line Producer, in order to oversee the production and management of studio animation schedules. Be aware of production deadlines and implement procedures to ensure they are met as agreed with the producer. 

To articulate the specific needs of a programme and, in conjunction with other members of the production team, set the mood, pace, language and ensure that these are maintained throughout, bringing out strong character animation, acting, performance and lip sync. 

Ensure that the crew is briefed, motivated, organised and understands the requirements and values of the production.

Working with the Animation Director, supervise the quality and quantity of shots and decide upon any reshoots.

To be involved in all areas of post production of a programme, from briefing the editor and attending the off-line edit, to signing off on music and sound and visual effects.  Be mindful of the post-production schedules and resources and manage time accordingly.

Build and maintain a relationship with our US clients and with the Line Producer, ensure that their approval is obtained at relevant stages.

To be flexible and have an understanding of the technical, creative and personal problems which can arise on a production. 

In conjunction with the Line Producer, to be responsible for the production of all deliverables for the series.
