REPORTING TO:
Head of News
PURPOSE OF JOB:
To initiate, research and produce authoritative, detailed coverage of politics across all platforms (TV, radio , online and on social media)
MAIN DUTIES:
- To identify and develop political reports across all platforms, to enhance UTV’s high standard of news and politics output, independently or as part of a team at the direction of the Head of News
- To play an integral part in setting the day’s politics and political agenda
- To demonstrate in-depth knowledge of politics in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and internationally
- To liaise with reporters, correspondents and producers to ensure the maximum quality of political coverage and analysis
- In consultation with the News Editor to ensure that there is adequate cover and resources to ensure a satisfactory level of coverage of political matters across the period of each week
- To be the point of contact for liaison with relevant agencies including the Dail, government departments and officials, political parties and other organisations
- To be directly involved in the editorial supervision and pre/post production of individual reports/packages, including writing scripts, sub-titling, introductions etc
- To contribute and “sell” stories and ideas to morning/production meetings and to the senior editorial team
- To take responsibility for legal and regulatory matters and to ensure all material on all platforms complies with broadcast codes
- To liaise with other resources and content teams to ensure efficient use of broadcast resources and to ensure the maximum quality of news and politics features coverage on all platforms
- To interview and report on screen, presenting either pre-recorded or live material and to conduct interviews in studio or on location
- To be aware of and act in accordance with health and safety considerations and requirements
- To share in the responsibility for maintaining and managing a detailed politics contacts database and diary
- To contribute to live on-air radio bulletins and to contribute to live and pre-recorded discussions on news and political matters
- To write and file news and politics stories and commentary from a variety of sources including television and radio for the online site, Group sites and social media
- To upload relevant still images, video and audio
- To work with forward planning to ensure full details of all politics stories are entered into the i-news diary
- To review and make recommendations to UTV management with regard to improvements in service provision and cost efficiencies
- To support other team members as required
- To work flexibly across a 7 day roster
- To represent UTV Ireland and contribute to appropriate seminars/conferences or other public events as required
- To undertake any other duties as requested by management
