‘Pirates’ Takes 2006 Irish Box Office Gold |

Disney’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest’ has struck gold in the Irish box office race. The adventure sequel starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley was the number one film of 2006 taking € 3,915,525 at the Irish box office.
The debut of 007 Daniel Craig in ‘Casino Royale’ proved a popular choice with Irish audiences winning second place. The Bond feature was marginally pipped for the top spot registering €3,793,239 box office receipts across the country.
Closely following in third place with a € 3,701,417 BO haul comes the Irish Civil war drama ‘The Wind that Shakes the Barley’, directed by Ken Loach and starring Cillian Murphy, Padraic Delaney and Orla Ftizgerald. The Irish/UK co-production won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and was the Irish success story of 2006 garnering critical acclaim across the globe.
‘Walk The Line’, the Oscar nominated musical biopic of Johnny Cash placed fourth, followed by Ron Howard’s blockbusting adaptation of Dan Brown’s bestseller ‘The Da Vinci Code’ in fifth position.
Leading the bottom half of the top ten is the recent comedy smash ‘Borat’ with €3,560,142, followed by the CG animation sequel ‘Ice Age 2: The Meltdown’, crime thriller ‘The Departed’, chick flick comedy ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and comic book comeback ‘Superman Returns’.
