Rich Peppiatt’s comedy Kneecap slated for GREAT 8 Showcase at Cannes
11 May 2023 : Luke Shanahan
Kneecap
The comedy, written and directed by Rich Peppiatt, will follow Irish-language rap group Kneecap in a fictionalised retelling of their origins. The film wrapped shooting this month, and is supported by Screen Ireland.

Peppiat’s film will follow Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí playing heightened versions of themselves against the backdrop of post-Troubles Belfast.  Michael Fassbender is also reported to appear in the film.

“For those who already know Kneecap as musicians,” said Peppiatt. “I promise this will be a film true to their hedonistic and anarchic soul. And for those who haven’t yet heard of Kneecap, well, buckle up…”

Curzon and Wildcard are handling distribution in Ireland and the UK, while Charades will be representing the film in international sales. Charades will be unveiling the first footage of the film at the GREAT 8 event, the annual Cannes buyers’ showcase of U.K. films from first and second-time directors.

Charades previously took part in GREAT 8 with Charlotte Regan’s Scrapper and Charlotte Wells’s Aftersun, for which Paul Mescal won Best Lead Actor (Film) at the 20th Anniversary IFTAs. The showcase is being backed by the BFI, BBC Films, Film4, the British Council, and the UK government’s GREAT campaign.

“We’re buzzing to show people a side of Belfast that isn’t about guns, bombs and death,” said Kneecap in a statement. “To give an insight into the youth culture that has been born out of that madness – we all needed a break from it and there’s revenge in our laughter. This is the North of Ireland and the importance of culture and community in the 21st Century.”

Kneecap is produced by Jack Tarling for Mother Tongues Films and Trevor Birney for Fine Point Films, with Patrick O’Neill co-producing for Wildcard. The Ireland-UK co-production is financed by Screen Ireland, BFI, Coimisiún na Meán, TG4 and Northern Ireland Screen, in association with Great Point Media and Curzon.

This will be Peppiatt’s first live-action narrative feature, following his award-winning satirical documentary One Rogue Reporter. He also previously directed a music video for Guilty Conscience by Kneecap.

All of the features will be available to buyers during the Cannes Marché, 16th - 24th May 2023.
